Overview

Glucobay 100mg Tablet contains Acarbose 100mg and is presented as a tablet. It is supplied in pack sizes of 10s and 100s.

It is classified as a non-prescription medicine, so no prescription is needed to order it. Under Malaysian rules for medicine information, this page carries product, safety and handling information only.

You can consult a doctor or pharmacist online on DoctorOnCall about this product before or after you order. Every order is checked by a registered pharmacist before it is delivered. Always read the label and the leaflet supplied with the pack.

Directions for Use

Glucobay 100mg Tablet should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually with the first bite of each main meal, either swallowed whole with a little liquid or chewed together with the first mouthful of food. Taking it any later than the start of a meal significantly reduces its effectiveness. Your doctor may start you on a lower dose and gradually increase it based on your response and tolerability, so do not change your dose without medical advice.

Dosage

The dosage of Glucobay 100mg Tablet is individualised by your doctor based on your blood glucose levels, treatment response, and tolerability, and treatment is often started at a lower strength before increasing to 100mg taken up to three times daily with main meals. Do not increase, decrease, or stop your dose on your own, and always follow the specific dosing schedule given by your prescribing doctor.

Shelf Life

Glucobay 100mg Tablet has a shelf life of approximately 36 months from the date of manufacture when stored correctly and unopened. Always check the expiry date printed on the blister strip and outer packaging before use, and do not use the product beyond its expiry date.

Storage Instructions

Store Glucobay 100mg Tablet below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture, in its original blister packaging until ready for use. Keep out of the reach and sight of children, and do not store in the bathroom or other humid areas.

Side Effects

  • Bloating or gas
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Mild skin rash
  • Temporary elevation in liver enzymes (requires monitoring)

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to acarbose or any ingredient in the tablet
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Intestinal obstruction or predisposition to intestinal obstruction
  • Chronic intestinal disorders associated with marked digestion or absorption problems
  • Conditions that may worsen with increased intestinal gas formation, such as large hernias
  • Severe kidney impairment
  • Liver cirrhosis

Drug / Food Interactions

  • May increase the risk of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) when combined with insulin or sulfonylurea-type antidiabetic medicines
  • If hypoglycaemia occurs while taking acarbose with another antidiabetic medicine, it must be corrected with glucose (dextrose), not ordinary table sugar, as acarbose blocks the breakdown of sucrose
  • Digestive enzyme preparations (such as those containing amylase) and intestinal adsorbents like activated charcoal may reduce the effectiveness of acarbose
  • Cholestyramine and neomycin may enhance the blood-glucose-lowering effect of acarbose and increase gastrointestinal side effects

Quick Tips

  • Always take Glucobay with the first bite of your main meal, never on an empty stomach between meals
  • Do not skip meals on days you take this medicine
  • If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, carry glucose tablets or dextrose in case of low blood sugar
  • Monitor your blood glucose regularly as advised by your doctor
  • Report persistent or severe stomach upset to your doctor
  • Continue following a controlled-carbohydrate diet and regular exercise alongside treatment
