Overview

Glyxambi 25/5mg Tablet contains empagliflozin and linagliptin 25/5mg, a combination of an SGLT2 (sodium-glucose co-transporter 2) inhibitor and a DPP-4 (dipeptidyl peptidase-4) inhibitor used together with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Empagliflozin lowers blood sugar by causing the kidneys to remove excess glucose through the urine, while linagliptin works by increasing levels of incretin hormones that help the pancreas release more insulin and reduce excess glucose production by the liver, particularly after meals.

How it Works

Empagliflozin inhibits SGLT2 transporters in the kidney, reducing glucose reabsorption so that excess sugar is excreted in the urine rather than returned to the bloodstream. Linagliptin blocks the DPP-4 enzyme, which normally breaks down incretin hormones (such as GLP-1); by prolonging their activity, linagliptin increases insulin release and decreases glucagon secretion in a glucose-dependent manner.

Directions for Use

Take Glyxambi 25/5mg Tablet once daily in the morning, with or without food, swallowing the tablet whole with a glass of water. Take it at the same time each day to help maintain steady blood sugar control, and continue your prescribed diet and exercise plan alongside this medicine.

Dosage

The usual dose of Glyxambi 25/5mg Tablet is one tablet (25/5mg) once daily, taken in the morning, with or without food. Your doctor will determine whether this strength and combination is appropriate for you based on your kidney function, current diabetes treatment, and blood sugar control, and may adjust your regimen over time.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Insulin or sulfonylureas (e.g. glimepiride) combined with this medicine increase the risk of hypoglycaemia and may require dose adjustment
  • Diuretics may add to the fluid-loss and blood-pressure-lowering effects of empagliflozin
  • Rifampicin and other strong enzyme inducers may reduce linagliptin’s effectiveness
  • Alcohol intake, especially in excess, can increase the risk of low blood sugar and dehydration

Quick Tips

  • Drink adequate water to help reduce the risk of dehydration and urinary tract infections
  • Practise good genital hygiene to lower the risk of yeast infections associated with SGLT2 inhibitors
  • Monitor your blood sugar as advised by your doctor, especially if you are also taking insulin or a sulfonylurea
  • Seek prompt medical advice if you feel unusually unwell, even if a routine blood sugar test looks normal, as this could indicate ketoacidosis
  • Tell your doctor before any surgery or major illness, as this medicine may need to be temporarily stopped
  • Continue following your prescribed diet and exercise programme alongside this medicine

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Glyxambi 25/5mg Tablet used for?

Glyxambi 25/5mg Tablet is used together with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Why might I get more urinary tract or yeast infections on this medicine?

Empagliflozin works by increasing glucose excretion through the urine, which can create an environment more prone to urinary tract and genital yeast infections. Good hygiene and adequate hydration can help reduce this risk.

Can this medicine cause low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia)?

On its own, this combination carries a low risk of hypoglycaemia, but the risk increases if combined with insulin or a sulfonylurea. Discuss your specific regimen and warning signs with your doctor.

What is diabetic ketoacidosis and why is it mentioned for this medicine?

SGLT2 inhibitors like empagliflozin have rarely been associated with diabetic ketoacidosis even when blood sugar is not very high. Seek urgent medical attention if you experience nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or unusual tiredness.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Glyxambi 25/5mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
