Overview

HOE Zellox-II Suspension is an over-the-counter (OTC) liquid antacid manufactured by Hoe Pharmaceutical Manufacturing (M) Sdn Bhd, a Malaysian pharmaceutical company. It is a “double strength” oral suspension in which each 10ml contains Aluminium Hydroxide 800mg, Magnesium Hydroxide 800mg, and Simethicone 60mg, supplied in a 100ml bottle.

The suspension combines two antacid compounds — aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide — together with simethicone, an anti-foaming agent, in a single oral liquid formulation. It is taken by mouth using the measuring cup or spoon provided, and the bottle should always be shaken well before each dose so the suspension is evenly mixed.

As an OTC product, HOE Zellox-II Suspension can be purchased without a doctor’s prescription and is available through DoctorOnCall for delivery within Malaysia and Singapore. It should be stored, dosed, and used strictly according to the printed label, and is not intended for long-term use without checking in with a pharmacist or doctor.

Directions for Use

Shake the bottle well before each use to ensure the suspension is evenly mixed. Measure the dose accurately using the measuring cup or spoon provided with the product — do not estimate the dose using an ordinary household spoon. Take the suspension by mouth, generally between meals and at bedtime, or as directed on the packaging or by a pharmacist or doctor.

If you are also taking other oral medicines, leave a gap of at least 2 hours between HOE Zellox-II Suspension and those medicines, as antacids can affect how other medicines are absorbed. Replace the cap tightly after each use.

Dosage

The usual adult and adolescent (12 years and above) dose is 5ml to 10ml, taken 3 to 4 times a day, or as directed on the product label or by a pharmacist or doctor.

For children under 12, dosing should only follow the specific guidance printed on the pack insert or given by a pharmacist or doctor — do not estimate a children’s dose from the adult dose.

Do not exceed the maximum daily dose stated on the packaging. If a dose is missed, take it when remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose — do not double up doses.

If symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks of regular use, or return frequently, stop self-treating and see a doctor.

Shelf Life

Use HOE Zellox-II Suspension before the expiry date printed on the bottle and outer carton. Once opened, follow any additional in-use shelf-life guidance printed on the label, and discard the bottle if this is not clearly stated and a reasonable period has passed since opening.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture.

Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use, and keep it out of the reach and sight of children.

Do not use the suspension if it has separated in a way that shaking does not correct, or if its colour, smell, or consistency has changed noticeably.

Side Effects

  • Common: Changes in bowel habit, including constipation (associated with aluminium hydroxide) or loose stools/diarrhoea (associated with magnesium hydroxide), particularly with higher or more frequent doses.
  • Common: Mild stomach discomfort, bloating, or an unusual taste after dosing.
  • Serious: Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, itching, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing — seek emergency medical attention immediately if this occurs.
  • Serious: Symptoms of electrolyte disturbance (such as unusual muscle weakness or confusion) with prolonged, high-dose, or inappropriate use, particularly in people with kidney problems — seek medical advice promptly.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity or allergy to aluminium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, simethicone, or any other ingredient in the suspension.
  • Severe kidney (renal) impairment, unless specifically directed and monitored by a doctor, as aluminium and magnesium can accumulate in the body.
  • Low blood phosphate levels (hypophosphataemia), as aluminium hydroxide can further lower phosphate levels.
  • Symptoms suggestive of appendicitis or an undiagnosed acute abdominal condition, as antacids can mask the underlying problem.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • This antacid suspension can reduce the absorption of many other oral medicines, including certain antibiotics (such as tetracyclines and some fluoroquinolones), iron supplements, and digoxin — leave a gap of at least 2 hours between doses of this product and other medicines.
  • It may also affect the absorption of certain antifungal medicines (such as ketoconazole) that require an acidic stomach environment to be absorbed properly.
  • Frequent or prolonged use alongside other magnesium- or aluminium-containing antacids or supplements is not recommended, as this can increase the risk of side effects related to these minerals.
  • No specific food interactions have been established; the suspension is commonly taken between meals and at bedtime as part of its normal dosing schedule.

Quick Tips

  • Always shake the bottle well before measuring a dose, so the suspension is evenly mixed.
  • Use the measuring cup or spoon provided rather than an ordinary kitchen spoon, to keep doses consistent.
  • Leave a gap of at least 2 hours between this suspension and other oral medicines you are taking.
  • Keep a simple record of how often you are using the product, and check in with a pharmacist if you find yourself needing it very frequently.
  • Store the bottle upright, tightly capped, and below 30°C.
  • Check the expiry date on the bottle before each use.
