Overview

Hovid Hosolvon 8mg Tablet is an oral tablet manufactured by Hovid Berhad, a Malaysian pharmaceutical company. Each tablet contains Bromhexine Hydrochloride 8mg as the active ingredient, a mucolytic agent formulated as a solid oral dosage form.

As an OTC product, this tablet is sold in pharmacies across Malaysia without requiring a doctor’s prescription. It is supplied in blister packaging, commonly available in packs of 3×10 or 10×10 tablets, and is intended for adults and older children who are able to swallow a tablet whole.

Hovid Berhad also manufactures a related liquid formulation, Hovid Hosolvon Elixir, which contains a lower strength of 4mg of bromhexine per 5ml. Because the tablet and the elixir are not dosed on a like-for-like basis, always check which specific Hosolvon product and strength you have before dosing, and do not combine the two without a pharmacist’s advice.

Directions for Use

Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water. Do not crush or chew the tablet unless a pharmacist has confirmed this is appropriate for your situation.

This tablet may be taken with or without food, as directed on the pack label or by a healthcare professional.

Take doses at evenly spaced intervals through the day, as directed on the label.

Do not take this tablet together with other bromhexine-containing products, including Hovid Hosolvon Elixir, without checking with a pharmacist first, as this can lead to an unintentionally higher total dose.

Dosage

Adults: 1 tablet (8mg) taken 3 times daily, or as directed by a doctor or pharmacist.

This tablet is not generally recommended for children under 2 years of age; a liquid formulation such as Hovid Hosolvon Elixir is generally more appropriate for younger children who cannot yet swallow a tablet, and a doctor or pharmacist should be consulted for the correct product and dose for a child. If symptoms persist for more than 5 days without improvement, stop self-treating and seek medical advice.

Shelf Life

Use before the expiry date printed on the blister strip and outer carton.

Do not use this product beyond the printed expiry date, and discard any tablets that appear discoloured, cracked, or otherwise damaged, even if the expiry date has not yet passed.

Storage Instructions

  • Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture.
  • Keep the tablets in their original blister packaging until ready to use, and store out of the reach and sight of children.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild nausea, stomach upset, or diarrhoea.
  • Common: Headache or dizziness.
  • Uncommon: Increased sweating.
  • Serious: Signs of an allergic reaction, such as skin rash, hives, facial or throat swelling, or difficulty breathing — stop use and seek emergency medical care immediately.
  • Serious: Severe skin reactions, such as widespread blistering or peeling skin, have been reported rarely with bromhexine-containing products — seek urgent medical attention if this occurs.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity or allergy to bromhexine hydrochloride or any other ingredient in this formulation.
  • Active peptic ulcer disease, unless specifically advised by a doctor, as mucolytic agents may affect the gastric mucosal barrier.
  • Use with caution in individuals with severe liver or kidney impairment; medical advice should be sought before use.
  • Not generally recommended for children under 2 years of age.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Should not be taken together with cough suppressants (antitussives) that suppress the natural cough reflex, as this can cause mucus to build up in the airways.
  • Do not take together with other bromhexine-containing products, including Hovid Hosolvon Elixir, without a pharmacist’s advice, to avoid exceeding the intended total daily dose.
  • Some antibiotics may reach higher concentrations in respiratory secretions when taken together with bromhexine — a doctor or pharmacist should still be consulted before combining any medicines.
  • No significant food interactions are known; this tablet may be taken with or without food.

Quick Tips

  • Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water rather than chewing it.
  • Space doses evenly through the day rather than taking them close together.
  • Do not combine this tablet with Hovid Hosolvon Elixir or other bromhexine products without checking with a pharmacist.
  • Keep track of how many days you have used this tablet; seek advice if there is no improvement after about 5 days.
  • Keep tablets in their blister strip until just before you take them, to keep them protected from moisture.
  • Store out of reach and sight of children at all times.

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Active ingredient: Bromhexine Hydrochloride 8mg per tablet.
  • Formulated as a solid oral tablet, intended to be swallowed whole with water.
  • This strength (8mg per tablet) is higher than the 4mg per 5ml strength in the separate Hovid Hosolvon Elixir — the two products are not dosed on a like-for-like basis.
  • Supplied in blister packaging, commonly in packs of 3x10 or 10x10 tablets.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Confirm which specific Hosolvon product and strength you have, as this 8mg tablet is not dosed on a like-for-like basis with the separate Hovid Hosolvon Elixir (4mg per 5ml). Do not combine this tablet with other bromhexine-containing products without checking with a pharmacist, to avoid exceeding the intended total daily dose. Individuals with active peptic ulcer disease, or significant liver or kidney impairment, should seek medical advice before use, as should anyone considering this tablet for a child under 2 years old.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Seek medical advice if symptoms persist for more than 5 days without improvement, or if they worsen. Seek emergency care immediately if signs of an allergic reaction occur, such as facial swelling, difficulty breathing, or a widespread skin rash, or if severe blistering or peeling of the skin develops.
