Overview

Hylo 2mg/ml Eye Gel (Hylo-Gel) is a preservative-free eye gel from the HYLO® eye care range manufactured by URSAPHARM (Germany), containing Sodium Hyaluronate at 2mg/ml (0.2%) as its sole active ingredient, together with a citrate buffer, sorbitol, and water for injections. It is a gel-consistency formulation, thicker and more viscous than a standard eye drop, supplied in a 10ml COMOD® multi-dose bottle (also available as a 2 x 10ml pack from the manufacturer).

The COMOD® delivery system dispenses each dose through a one-way valve, keeping the remaining gel sterile without the need for chemical preservatives such as benzalkonium chloride. It is preservative-free and phosphate-free, which avoids the risk of corneal calcification associated with phosphate-containing eye products in some patients. It belongs to the class of high-viscosity ocular lubricant/surface-protectant products, sold Over-the-Counter (OTC) as an eye care product in Malaysia and can be purchased without needing a doctor’s prescription.

Hylo-Gel is differentiated from the Hylo Dual and Hylo Dual Intense eye drops in the same range by containing sodium hyaluronate alone, without added ectoin, and by its thicker gel texture, which allows it to remain on the eye’s surface for longer between applications compared with a thinner eye drop. It is supplied in a 10ml bottle.

Directions for Use

Wash hands before use. Tilt the head back slightly, gently pull down the lower eyelid to form a small pocket, and instil one drop of the gel into the affected eye(s). Because the gel is thicker than a standard eye drop, vision may be briefly blurred immediately after application — many users find it more convenient to apply it shortly before going to sleep for this reason, though it can also be used during the day if advised. Avoid letting the bottle tip touch the eye, eyelid, or any other surface to keep the solution sterile. If vision remains blurred, avoid driving or operating machinery until it clears.

Dosage

Typical use is 1 drop of gel instilled into the affected eye(s), commonly once to a few times a day, or as advised by an eye care professional, adjusted according to symptom severity — always follow the specific frequency printed on your product label or advised by your pharmacist or eye doctor, since gel-based lubricants are often used less frequently than standard drops due to their longer-lasting consistency. There is no “missed dose” concern given its as-needed use pattern. Seek medical review if eye discomfort persists beyond 2-3 days of regular use, worsens, or is accompanied by pain, vision changes, redness, or discharge.

Shelf Life

Use before the expiry date printed on the carton. In line with standard HYLO® product guidance, the opened bottle should generally be discarded 6 months after first opening, even though it is preservative-free — always check the discard-by information printed on your specific pack.

Storage Instructions

Store below 25°C. Keep the bottle upright and tightly closed between uses. Do not use if the tamper-evident seal is broken or if the gel appears discoloured or contains particles. Keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Common: Temporary blurring of vision immediately after application, due to the gel’s thicker consistency.
  • Common: Mild stinging or a sensation of the eye feeling slightly sticky right after instillation.
  • Serious: Signs of eye infection or an allergic reaction, such as significant redness, swelling, pain, or discharge — discontinue use and seek medical attention if these occur.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to sodium hyaluronate or any other listed ingredient.
  • Not for injection, and not for use anywhere other than the eye.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • No systemic drug interactions are expected, as Hylo-Gel acts locally on the eye surface with negligible systemic absorption.
  • If using more than one type of eye drop or eye gel, apply the thinner eye drop first and the thicker gel last, spacing them at least 5-10 minutes apart so the gel does not block absorption of the other product.
  • No food interactions apply, as this is a topical eye product and is not taken orally.

Quick Tips

  • Wash your hands before instilling the gel each time.
  • Avoid touching the bottle tip to your eye, eyelid, or any other surface to keep the solution sterile.
  • Store the bottle upright and recap it tightly after every use.
  • Write the date you first open the bottle on the carton so you know when to discard it.
  • If your vision is blurred after applying the gel, wait until it clears before driving or doing tasks that need clear eyesight.
  • If you use other eye drops too, apply the thinner drop first and the gel last.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the active ingredient in Hylo 2mg/ml Eye Gel, and what other ingredients does it contain?

The active ingredient is Sodium Hyaluronate at 2mg/ml (0.2%). The formulation also contains a citrate buffer, sorbitol, and water for injections, and is preservative-free and phosphate-free.

How is Hylo-Gel different from Hylo Dual Eye Drop or Hylo Dual Intense Eye Drop?

Hylo-Gel contains sodium hyaluronate alone, without added ectoin, and is formulated as a thicker gel rather than a thinner drop. Hylo Dual and Hylo Dual Intense combine sodium hyaluronate with ectoin in a lower-viscosity eye-drop format, at 0.05% and 0.2% hyaluronate strength respectively.

Does Hylo 2mg/ml Eye Gel contain preservatives?

No. It is preservative-free and phosphate-free, using the COMOD® multi-dose delivery system to keep the gel sterile without chemical preservatives such as benzalkonium chloride.

Why does my vision blur briefly after using this eye gel?

This is a normal effect of the product’s thicker gel consistency, which is more viscous than a standard eye drop. Many users prefer to apply it shortly before sleeping for this reason, though it can be used at other times if advised — just avoid driving or similarly visually demanding tasks until your vision clears.

How long can the bottle be used after it is first opened?

In line with standard HYLO® product guidance, the bottle should generally be discarded 6 months after first opening — check the specific discard-by information printed on your pack.

Who should avoid Hylo 2mg/ml Eye Gel?

Anyone with a known hypersensitivity to sodium hyaluronate or any other listed ingredient should avoid this product.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Hylo-Gel’s thicker consistency means vision may be temporarily blurred after each application, which should be taken into account before driving or other visually demanding tasks. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals and children may generally use lubricating eye gels of this type, but should check with a doctor or pharmacist first if there is any uncertainty. Remove contact lenses before use unless specifically advised that the product is suitable to use with lenses in place, as gel-consistency products can behave differently from thinner drops around a lens.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Seek professional advice if eye discomfort, redness, or irritation does not improve after a few days of regular use, or if you notice vision changes, eye pain, or discharge, as these may indicate a condition that needs separate evaluation and treatment.
