Overview

Imuran 50mg Tablet contains Azathioprine 50mg and is available as a tablet. It is classified as a prescription medicine and may only be obtained with a valid prescription from a registered medical practitioner.

Only product, safety and handling information is published here. Anything beyond that is explained to you directly by your doctor or pharmacist as part of your consultation.

DoctorOnCall is a licensed online pharmacy. Orders for Imuran 50mg Tablet are processed only after a doctor has assessed your suitability and issued a prescription, and every order is checked by a registered pharmacist before it is sent out.

Directions for Use

Take Imuran 50mg Tablet with or after food to reduce stomach upset, and swallow the tablet whole – do not crush or break it, as contact with broken tablets should be avoided by caregivers, particularly during pregnancy. This medicine requires regular blood tests (full blood count and liver function) throughout treatment to monitor for bone marrow suppression and liver effects, so attend all scheduled check-ups.

Dosage

The dose of Imuran 50mg Tablet is individualised and determined by a specialist doctor based on your body weight, indication, and blood test results, and is typically started low and adjusted according to your response and blood counts. Never adjust your dose yourself; always follow your doctor’s instructions closely.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhoea
  • Increased risk of infections
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Skin rash or sensitivity to sunlight
  • Low blood cell counts (anaemia, low white blood cells or platelets)
  • Liver enzyme changes (rare)

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to azathioprine or mercaptopurine
  • Severe, active infections, particularly during periods of significant immune suppression
  • Known thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) or NUDT15 deficiency without appropriate dose adjustment, due to a high risk of severe toxicity
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding, unless the benefit is judged by your specialist to outweigh the risk
  • Concurrent live vaccines

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Allopurinol markedly increases azathioprine levels and toxicity – the azathioprine dose must be substantially reduced if combined, only under specialist supervision
  • Other immunosuppressants or corticosteroids increase the overall risk of infection when combined
  • ACE inhibitors and co-trimoxazole may increase the risk of blood cell suppression
  • Warfarin’s blood-thinning effect may be reduced by azathioprine, requiring closer monitoring

Quick Tips

  • Attend every scheduled blood test appointment, as this medicine requires close monitoring throughout treatment
  • Report fever, unexplained bruising, bleeding, or infection symptoms to your doctor immediately
