Overview

Invokana 100mg Tablet contains canagliflozin 100mg, a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor manufactured by Janssen, used together with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It works differently from many other diabetes medicines, acting directly on the kidneys rather than on insulin release or sensitivity.

Canagliflozin works by blocking the SGLT2 protein in the kidneys, which normally reabsorbs glucose back into the bloodstream. By blocking this reabsorption, excess glucose is instead removed from the body in the urine, which lowers blood sugar levels.

How it Works

Canagliflozin selectively inhibits SGLT2, the transporter mainly responsible for reabsorbing filtered glucose back into the blood in the kidney’s proximal tubule. Blocking this transporter increases the amount of glucose excreted in the urine, lowering blood glucose levels independently of insulin secretion or action.

Directions for Use

Take Invokana 100mg Tablet once daily, before the first meal of the day. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Maintain good hydration, especially in hot weather or if you are unwell, as this medicine increases urination and fluid loss.

Dosage

The usual starting dose of Invokana 100mg Tablet is once daily, taken before the first meal of the day, with your doctor determining the correct strength for you based on your blood sugar control and kidney function. Your doctor will periodically review your kidney function and may adjust your dose or other diabetes medicines accordingly.

  • Rifampicin, phenytoin, and other enzyme-inducing medicines can lower canagliflozin levels and reduce its effectiveness
  • Digoxin levels may be modestly increased when taken together with canagliflozin

Quick Tips

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Invokana 100mg Tablet used for?

Invokana 100mg Tablet is used together with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Why does this medicine cause more urination and thirst?

Canagliflozin works by removing excess glucose through the urine, which naturally increases urine output and can make you feel thirstier – staying well hydrated is important while taking this medicine.

Can this medicine cause a serious condition even if my blood sugar looks normal?

Yes, in rare cases SGLT2 inhibitors like canagliflozin can be associated with diabetic ketoacidosis, which can occur even when blood sugar readings are only mildly raised or normal. Seek urgent medical attention for nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or unusual tiredness.

Why am I more prone to genital yeast infections on this medicine?

The extra glucose passed in the urine with canagliflozin can encourage yeast growth in the genital area. Good hygiene helps, and your doctor can advise on treatment if an infection develops.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Invokana 100mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
