Directions for Use

Wash hands before use, gently pull down the lower eyelid to form a pocket, and apply a small ribbon of ointment (about 1cm) along the inside of the lower eyelid, then close the eyes gently for about a minute to help the ointment spread evenly.

Storage Instructions

Store below 25°C in a dry place away from direct sunlight, keep the tube tightly capped after each use, and keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Temporary blurred vision immediately after application
  • Mild stinging or burning sensation
  • Eye irritation or redness
  • Itching around the eye
  • Rarely, allergic skin reactions around the eyelid

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to chloramphenicol or other antibiotics in the same class
  • Viral or fungal eye infections (this ointment is not effective against these)
  • Use with contact lenses in place unless advised otherwise by a doctor
  • Self-treatment of deep eye pain, significant vision loss, or suspected foreign body without medical assessment

Drug / Food Interactions

  • No significant systemic drug interactions are typically reported with topical eye use due to minimal systemic absorption
  • Avoid using other eye drops or ointments at the same time without spacing them apart, as advised by a pharmacist
  • Do not combine with other antibiotic eye products unless directed by a doctor

Quick Tips

  • Wash hands before and after application to avoid introducing further infection
  • Avoid touching the tube tip to the eye or any surface to prevent contamination
  • Do not wear contact lenses while symptoms are present and during treatment
  • Vision may be blurred briefly after application, so avoid driving immediately afterward
  • See a doctor if symptoms worsen or do not improve within a few days

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Chloramphenicol 1% w/w
  • Liquid paraffin
  • White soft paraffin
  • Wool fat (lanolin) or equivalent ointment base

Relevant Information

Bacterial conjunctivitis is often self-limiting but antibiotic treatment can shorten its duration and reduce spread to others, so good hygiene practices such as avoiding eye touching and not sharing towels or pillows are important alongside using this ointment as directed.
