Lamitor 50mg Tablet

Lamitor 50mg Tablet contains lamotrigine 50mg, an anticonvulsant (antiepileptic) medicine that is also used as a mood stabiliser. It is used to treat certain types of epilepsy and to help prevent mood episodes, particularly depressive episodes, in bipolar disorder. This product is manufactured by Torrent Pharmaceuticals.

Lamotrigine works mainly by blocking voltage-sensitive sodium channels on nerve cell membranes, which stabilises overactive neurons and reduces the release of excitatory neurotransmitters such as glutamate. This helps prevent the abnormal, excessive electrical activity that causes seizures and is also thought to underlie its mood-stabilising effect.

Lamotrigine blocks voltage-gated sodium channels in a use-dependent manner, meaning it preferentially dampens rapidly firing neurons typical of a seizure while having less effect on normal nerve activity. By stabilising these channels, it reduces the release of glutamate and other excitatory neurotransmitters, calming abnormal electrical activity in the brain.

Take Lamitor 50mg Tablet exactly as prescribed, at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water; it can be chewed or dispersed in water if swallowing whole is difficult, following your doctor’s or pharmacist’s specific instructions. Do not stop this medicine suddenly, as abruptly stopping an antiepileptic medicine can trigger seizures – your doctor will advise how to reduce the dose gradually if treatment needs to be stopped.

Lamitor 50mg Tablet must be started at a low dose and increased very slowly, following a specific titration schedule set by your doctor – this schedule differs depending on whether you are also taking valproate or certain other antiepileptic medicines, as these change how quickly lamotrigine can be increased. Never change your dose or titration speed on your own, even if you feel your seizures or mood are not yet fully controlled, as increasing the dose too quickly significantly raises the risk of a serious skin reaction.

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

• Known hypersensitivity to lamotrigine or any ingredient in this product
• A previous serious skin reaction to lamotrigine
• Caution required in patients with significant liver or kidney impairment, requiring dose adjustment

• Sodium valproate significantly increases lamotrigine blood levels, so a much slower titration and lower dose is required when the two are combined
• Carbamazepine, phenytoin, and phenobarbital can lower lamotrigine levels by speeding up its breakdown, often requiring a higher lamotrigine dose
• Oestrogen-containing hormonal contraceptives can lower lamotrigine levels, and lamotrigine may also affect contraceptive hormone levels – discuss contraception planning with your doctor
• Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness when combined with lamotrigine

• Follow your doctor’s exact titration schedule when starting or adjusting this medicine – never speed it up on your own
• Stop the medicine and seek urgent medical attention for any new skin rash, especially with fever or mouth/eye symptoms
• Do not stop this medicine suddenly without medical advice, even if you feel well
• Tell your doctor before starting or stopping hormonal contraception, as it can interact with lamotrigine levels
• Avoid or limit alcohol, as it can add to dizziness and drowsiness
• Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medicine affects you, as it can cause dizziness or blurred vision
