Overview

Letara Letrozole 2.5mg Tablet contains letrozole 2.5mg, an aromatase inhibitor used mainly in the treatment of hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women. This product is manufactured by Hetero Labs. It is sometimes used off-label, under specialist supervision, to induce ovulation in certain fertility treatments.

Letrozole works by blocking the aromatase enzyme, which is responsible for converting androgens into oestrogen in body tissues. By lowering circulating oestrogen levels, letrozole slows or stops the growth of breast cancer cells that depend on oestrogen to grow.

How it Works

Letrozole reversibly binds to and inhibits the aromatase enzyme, which normally converts androstenedione and testosterone into oestrone and oestradiol in peripheral tissues. In postmenopausal women, this is the main remaining source of oestrogen production, so blocking it significantly lowers oestrogen levels and deprives hormone-sensitive cancer cells of the signal they need to grow.

Directions for Use

Take Letara Letrozole 2.5mg Tablet once daily, at about the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not stop or change the dose on your own, even if you feel well or experience side effects – discuss any concerns with your oncology or fertility care team first.

Dosage

The usual dose of Letara Letrozole 2.5mg Tablet for breast cancer treatment is one tablet (2.5mg) once daily, continued for the duration recommended by your oncologist, which may extend to several years for adjuvant treatment. When used for ovulation induction, dosing and timing within the menstrual cycle are individualised by your fertility specialist. This medicine should only be used under specialist supervision.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Tamoxifen and other oestrogen-containing medicines may reduce letrozole’s effectiveness and are generally avoided during treatment
  • Other medicines or supplements that affect bone density (e.g. long-term corticosteroids) may compound letrozole’s effect on bone strength
  • Hormonal contraceptives are not suitable to combine with letrozole in premenopausal use, as they interfere with the hormonal effect being targeted
  • Always inform your oncologist or fertility specialist of every medicine and supplement you are taking

Quick Tips

  • Take this medicine at the same time every day exactly as your specialist has prescribed
  • Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments, including bone density (DEXA) scans as advised, since letrozole can reduce bone strength over time
  • Report new or worsening bone or joint pain, unusual swelling, or breathlessness to your doctor promptly
  • Discuss calcium and vitamin D intake, and any bone-protective measures, with your care team
  • Do not use this medicine to try to conceive without direct specialist guidance, even though it is sometimes used for fertility treatment
  • Keep all appointments for blood tests and clinical monitoring during treatment

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Letara Letrozole 2.5mg Tablet used for?

Letara Letrozole 2.5mg Tablet is mainly used to treat hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women, and is sometimes used off-label under specialist supervision to help induce ovulation in fertility treatment.

How does letrozole differ from tamoxifen?

Letrozole is an aromatase inhibitor that lowers the body’s own oestrogen production, while tamoxifen blocks oestrogen receptors directly. Your oncologist chooses between them (or sequences them) based on your menopausal status and cancer characteristics.

Will I need bone density monitoring while on this medicine?

Yes, letrozole can reduce bone mineral density over time, so your doctor will usually arrange periodic bone density (DEXA) scans and may recommend calcium, vitamin D, or bone-protective treatment as needed.

Can I take this medicine if I have not yet reached menopause?

Letrozole is primarily used in postmenopausal women. If you are premenopausal, it should only be used under close specialist supervision, often alongside other treatment to suppress ovarian function, or for fertility purposes as directed.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Letara Letrozole 2.5mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember on the same day, but skip it entirely if you do not remember until the next day – do not take a double dose. Contact your care team if you are unsure.

Why do I need regular follow-up appointments while taking this medicine?

Regular follow-up allows your oncology team to monitor how well the cancer is responding to treatment, check for side effects such as joint symptoms or bone changes, and adjust your overall treatment plan as needed.
