Loceryl 5% Nail Lacquer

Loceryl 5% Nail Lacquer is a topical antifungal preparation containing amorolfine hydrochloride at a 5% w/v concentration, formulated as a medicated nail lacquer rather than a cream or oral tablet. It belongs to the topical antifungal (morpholine derivative) product class and is manufactured by Galderma. Loceryl is sold in Malaysia in a 2.5ml bottle, complete with an applicator brush, nail files, and cleansing wipes.

What sets Loceryl apart from a standard antifungal cream is its lacquer-based, once- or twice-weekly application onto the nail plate itself, rather than a daily application to surrounding skin. The lacquer film adheres to the nail surface and is removed periodically with a special applicator or file rather than washed off like a cream. This nail lacquer format is not intended for use on skin folds or mucous membranes.

Loceryl 5% Nail Lacquer is available in Malaysia as an OTC (Over-the-Counter) product, and can be purchased at a pharmacy without a doctor’s prescription, although pharmacist advice is recommended, particularly for nail conditions that do not improve or that affect a large area of the nail.

Before the first application, file the surface of the affected nail(s) as thoroughly as possible using one of the disposable nail files provided, then clean the nail with one of the cleansing wipes provided and allow it to dry. Apply the lacquer evenly over the entire nail surface using the applicator built into the bottle cap, covering the whole nail, and allow it to dry for a few minutes before putting on socks or gloves. Avoid washing the treated nail(s) for at least 6 hours after application.

Before each subsequent application (generally once or twice a week, as directed on the pack), remove the remaining lacquer with the cleansing wipe or by filing, rather than using nail polish remover. Use a separate file for infected and non-infected nails, and do not share the applicator or files with other people, to avoid spreading fungal infection. Treatment is typically continued for several months and until the healthy nail has fully grown out — this can take around 6 months for fingernails and 9 to 12 months for toenails, and is often reviewed by a pharmacist or doctor periodically.

The standard application frequency for adults is once or twice weekly, applied to the entire surface of the affected nail(s), as directed on the pack label. There is no oral ‘dose’ as such, since this is a topical nail lacquer rather than a swallowed medicine. If an application is missed, simply apply it as soon as remembered and continue on the usual weekly schedule, rather than applying it more than once in a short period to make up for a missed application.

A doctor or pharmacist should be consulted if there is no visible improvement in the nail after 3 months of regular use, if the infection appears to be spreading to surrounding skin, if more than two or three nails are affected, or if the person has diabetes or a condition affecting blood circulation to the feet, as these situations may need a different or additional treatment approach.

Use Loceryl 5% Nail Lacquer before the expiry date printed on the carton. Once opened, the lacquer is generally intended to be used within the period stated on the pack insert (commonly up to 6 months after first opening) — check the printed information for the exact in-use period, as the lacquer can thicken or dry out over time once exposed to air.

Store below 30°C, tightly closed, away from direct heat and open flame, as the lacquer base is flammable. Keep out of the reach and sight of children. Do not store in the refrigerator.

• Common: A mild burning or stinging sensation at the application site shortly after use.
• Common: Temporary redness, itching, or a change in the appearance of the treated nail.
• Uncommon: Brittleness, discolouration, or damage to the nail during treatment, which is usually reversible once the nail regrows.
• Serious: Signs of an allergic reaction, such as a spreading rash, swelling, or blistering around the nail or surrounding skin — stop use and seek medical advice if this occurs.

• Known hypersensitivity to amorolfine or any other ingredient in the lacquer.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding, unless a doctor has specifically advised that it is necessary.
• Use in children, unless directed by a doctor, as safety and dosing in children have not been well established.

• No clinically significant drug interactions have been established for amorolfine nail lacquer, as absorption into the bloodstream through the nail is minimal.
• Avoid applying other nail cosmetic products, nail polish, or artificial nails over treated nails, as this may reduce contact between the lacquer and the nail surface.
• Using more than one topical antifungal nail product on the same nail at the same time is not recommended unless specifically advised by a doctor or pharmacist.
• No food interactions are relevant, as this is a topical product applied to the nail rather than taken by mouth.

• File the nail surface thoroughly before the very first application to help the lacquer make good contact with the nail.
• Apply the lacquer to clean, dry nails only, and let it dry fully before covering the nail with socks, shoes, or gloves.
• Use a separate disposable file for each treated nail to avoid cross-contamination.
• Keep track of your weekly application schedule, for example by marking it on a calendar.
• Do not use ordinary nail polish remover to take off the lacquer between applications — use the cleansing wipes provided or gentle filing instead.
• Store the bottle tightly closed and away from heat, as the lacquer base is flammable.

Precautions: Avoid applying Loceryl to skin surrounding the nail if possible, and wash hands after application if lacquer comes into contact with skin. People with diabetes or poor circulation to the feet should check with a doctor before self-treating a nail condition, as they may need closer monitoring. Avoid nail lacquer, false nails, or other cosmetic nail treatments on a nail being treated with Loceryl. Keep the applicator and files for personal use only, and do not share them with other people.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: See a doctor or pharmacist if there is no improvement after 3 months of regular use, if the affected area spreads to the surrounding skin, if several nails are affected, if you have diabetes, or if you notice increasing pain, swelling, or discharge around the nail, as these may need a different treatment approach.
