Overview

Lynparza 150mg Tablet contains olaparib, a targeted oral cancer medicine belonging to a class called PARP inhibitors, used to treat certain ovarian, breast, pancreatic, and prostate cancers, often in patients with a BRCA gene mutation or similar DNA-repair defect confirmed by genetic testing.

It works by blocking the PARP enzyme that cancer cells rely on to repair damaged DNA. In cancer cells that already have a weakened BRCA-related DNA repair pathway, blocking PARP as well leaves the DNA damage unrepaired, causing the cancer cell to die.

How it Works

Lynparza inhibits PARP enzymes, which cancer cells use as a backup pathway to repair single-strand DNA breaks. In cells with a BRCA mutation, the main DNA-repair pathway is already impaired, so blocking PARP as well leads to an accumulation of DNA damage that the cancer cell cannot survive – an effect sometimes called “synthetic lethality”.

Directions for Use

Swallow the tablet whole with water, with or without food, at consistent times roughly 12 hours apart; do not chew, crush, dissolve, or split the tablet.

Dosage

The usual dose is 300mg (two 150mg tablets) taken twice daily, but the exact dose and any adjustment for side effects is individualised by the treating oncologist based on genetic test results, blood counts, and tolerability.

Shelf Life

Refer to the expiry date printed on the packaging.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fatigue or weakness

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to olaparib or any ingredient in the tablet
  • Breastfeeding during treatment and for a period after the last dose, as advised by the oncology team

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Strong or moderate CYP3A inhibitors (such as certain antifungals and some antibiotics) can raise olaparib levels and generally require dose adjustment or avoidance.
  • Strong or moderate CYP3A inducers (such as rifampicin) can lower olaparib levels and reduce its effectiveness.
  • Inform your oncology team of all medicines and supplements you are taking, as many common drugs interact through this pathway.

Quick Tips

  • Attend all scheduled full blood count monitoring, as this medicine can affect blood cell production over time.
  • Report unusual bruising, prolonged tiredness, or repeated infections promptly, as these may need urgent evaluation.
  • Take doses at consistent times about 12 hours apart to maintain steady drug levels.
  • Do not start or stop any other medicine, including over-the-counter products, without checking with your oncology team first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Lynparza 150mg used for?

It is a targeted oral cancer medicine used to treat certain BRCA-mutated ovarian, breast, pancreatic, and prostate cancers.

Do I need genetic testing before starting this medicine?

Yes, BRCA or related gene mutation testing is generally required to confirm this medicine is appropriate for your cancer.

How does olaparib work?

It blocks a DNA-repair enzyme (PARP) that cancer cells with a BRCA mutation rely on, causing unrepaired DNA damage to build up and the cancer cell to die.

Can this medicine affect my blood counts?

Yes, it can cause anaemia and other low blood counts, and rarely a serious blood disorder, so regular blood tests are an important part of monitoring.

Can I take this with food?

Yes, it can be taken with or without food, but should be taken at consistent times about 12 hours apart.

What if I have trouble swallowing tablets?

Do not crush, chew, or split the tablet; speak with your oncology team if swallowing is difficult.

Are there medicines I should avoid while on this treatment?

Certain antifungals, antibiotics, and enzyme-inducing medicines (like rifampicin) can significantly change olaparib levels – always check with your oncology team before starting anything new.
