Overview

Montelair 5mg Chewable Tablet contains Montelukast sodium equivalent to montelukast 5mg and is presented as a tablet. It is supplied in pack sizes of 10s and 30s.

It is classified as a non-prescription medicine, so no prescription is needed to order it. Under Malaysian rules for medicine information, this page carries product, safety and handling information only.

You can consult a doctor or pharmacist online on DoctorOnCall about this product before or after you order. Every order is checked by a registered pharmacist before it is delivered. Always read the label and the leaflet supplied with the pack.

Directions for Use

Give Montelair 5mg Chewable Tablet to the child once daily, generally in the evening, ensuring the tablet is chewed thoroughly before swallowing. It may be given with or without food. Continue the medicine regularly, even on days the child has no symptoms, unless the doctor advises otherwise.

Dosage

The usual dose for children aged 6 to 14 years is one 5mg chewable tablet once daily in the evening, as prescribed by the child’s doctor. Do not give more than one tablet in place of a missed dose; simply give the next dose at the usual time and inform the doctor if doses are frequently missed.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the tablets in their original packaging and store well out of reach and sight of children, as the chewable, flavoured form may be mistaken for a sweet.

Side Effects

  • Headache
  • Stomach discomfort or pain
  • Cough
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Sore throat
  • Diarrhoea

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to montelukast or any ingredient in the chewable tablet
  • Not for treating an acute asthma attack; a fast-acting reliever inhaler should still be available
  • Caution advised in children with phenylketonuria if the formulation contains aspartame — check the product information
  • Not intended for children below the age range specified by the doctor without medical advice

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Phenobarbital and rifampicin may reduce blood levels of montelukast and its effectiveness
  • No significant food interactions are known; the chewable tablet may be given with or without food
  • Inform the child’s doctor of all other medicines the child is taking
  • Do not stop any inhaled corticosteroid or other prescribed asthma medicine without the doctor’s advice when starting montelukast

Quick Tips

  • Give the chewable tablet at the same time each evening for consistency
  • Make sure the tablet is chewed properly before swallowing, not swallowed whole by young children
  • Continue treatment during symptom-free periods, as it is a preventer, not a rescue medicine
  • Always keep a fast-acting reliever inhaler available for sudden asthma symptoms
  • Watch for and report any new mood, sleep, or behaviour changes to the doctor
  • Store safely away from young children given its sweet, chewable form

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Montelukast sodium equivalent to montelukast 5mg (active ingredient)
  • Mannitol
  • Microcrystalline cellulose
  • Cherry or other flavouring agent
  • Aspartame or other sweetening agent (check product pack for phenylalanine content)
