Overview

Mydriacyl 1% Opthalmic Solution is a solution with Tropicamide 1% w/v declared as its active content. It is supplied in a pack size of 15ml.

This is a non-prescription product and can be purchased without a prescription. Only product, safety and handling details are published on this page.

An online consultation with a DoctorOnCall doctor or pharmacist is available for this product, and a registered pharmacist reviews each order before dispatch to Malaysia or Singapore. Follow the directions on the label and on the leaflet inside the pack.

Directions for Use

Mydriacyl is administered by a doctor, optometrist, or trained clinical staff as one or more drops instilled into the eye during an eye examination or prior to a diagnostic or treatment procedure, with gentle pressure sometimes applied at the inner corner of the eye afterward to reduce systemic absorption. It is not intended for self-administration at home; if a doctor has specifically prescribed take-home use for a particular clinical reason, it should be used exactly as instructed, with the same care to avoid the dropper touching the eye or any surface.

Dosage

For routine pupil dilation in adults, one to two drops of Mydriacyl 1% are typically instilled into the eye(s), with the effect usually apparent within 15 to 30 minutes and lasting several hours; the exact number of drops and any repeat dosing needed is determined by the examining clinician based on the degree of dilation required and the individual’s response. Dosing in children is adjusted by the clinician and is generally more conservative due to a greater sensitivity to systemic absorption.

Shelf Life

Use before the expiry date printed on the bottle and carton. Once opened, multi-dose bottles are typically discarded after 4 weeks in line with standard ophthalmic solution practice, or as instructed by the supervising clinic or pharmacist, to maintain sterility.

Storage Instructions

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place protected from light. Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use and store out of the reach and sight of children, as accidental ingestion or ocular exposure in children can cause systemic effects.

Side Effects

  • Temporary stinging or burning sensation in the eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Dry mouth
  • Headache
  • Eye redness

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to tropicamide or any component of the solution
  • Untreated narrow-angle or angle-closure glaucoma, or individuals with anatomically narrow anterior chamber angles, due to the risk of triggering an acute rise in eye pressure
  • Should not be self-administered without a clinician’s assessment, as the decision to dilate the pupil takes into account each patient’s eye anatomy and medical history
  • Caution in infants and young children, in whom systemic absorption can more readily cause effects such as fever, flushing, or rapid heartbeat
  • Caution in individuals with Down syndrome, who may show an exaggerated pupillary response

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Other anticholinergic (antimuscarinic) medicines taken systemically may add to tropicamide’s effects, such as dry mouth or increased heart rate, though this is generally only relevant with repeated or high-dose clinical use
  • If other eye drops are used around the same time, the clinician will determine an appropriate order and spacing of administration
  • No specific food interactions are known for this clinically administered eye drop
  • Patients should inform the examining clinician of all medicines and known allergies before the drop is administered

Quick Tips

  • Expect blurred near vision and increased light sensitivity for several hours after your eye examination; arrange for someone else to drive you home if possible
  • Bring sunglasses to your appointment to wear afterward, as your eyes will be more sensitive to bright light while dilated
  • Tell your eye care professional about any history of glaucoma, narrow angles, or eye pressure problems before this drop is used
  • Avoid tasks requiring sharp near vision, such as reading fine print, until the effects wear off
  • Seek prompt medical attention if you develop sudden severe eye pain, redness, nausea, or vomiting after dilation, as these can be signs of an acute rise in eye pressure
  • This product is administered under clinical supervision and is not intended for routine self-use at home

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Tropicamide 1% w/v (active ingredient)
  • Benzalkonium chloride (preservative)
  • Sodium chloride and other tonicity agents
  • Buffering agents to maintain appropriate pH
  • Purified water as the vehicle base

Relevant Information

Pupil dilation with an agent like tropicamide is a standard, well-established part of a comprehensive eye examination, allowing your eye care professional to properly assess the retina, optic nerve, and other internal eye structures that cannot be fully seen through an undilated pupil. Before using it, your clinician will typically check for risk factors such as narrow anterior chamber angles or a history of angle-closure glaucoma, since dilating the pupil can occasionally trigger a sudden, sight-threatening rise in eye pressure in susceptible individuals. The temporary blurred near vision and light sensitivity that follow are expected and resolve as the drug wears off, but any severe eye pain, nausea, or vomiting after the examination should be treated as urgent and reported immediately.
