Overview

Normaten 50mg Tablet contains atenolol 50mg, a beta-1 selective beta-blocker used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and angina (chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart).

Atenolol works by blocking beta-1 adrenergic receptors, mainly found in the heart, reducing the effect of adrenaline-like hormones on heart rate and force of contraction. This slows the heart rate, lowers blood pressure, and reduces the heart’s oxygen demand.

How it Works

Atenolol selectively blocks beta-1 adrenergic receptors, which are concentrated in the heart. By blocking these receptors, atenolol reduces the heart rate and the force of each heartbeat, lowering the heart’s oxygen demand and blood pressure, and reducing the frequency of angina episodes.

Directions for Use

Take Normaten 50mg Tablet at about the same time every day, with or without food, swallowing the tablet whole with water. Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, even if you feel well, as abruptly stopping a beta-blocker can cause a rebound increase in heart rate, blood pressure, or worsening of angina.

Dosage

The usual starting dose of Normaten 50mg Tablet for hypertension or angina is 50mg once daily, which your doctor may increase to 100mg daily if needed based on your response. Your doctor will adjust the dose according to your blood pressure, heart rate, and kidney function.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

  • Cold hands and feet
  • Slower heart rate
  • Nausea
  • Shortness of breath in some cases

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Verapamil or diltiazem (rate-lowering calcium channel blockers) combined with atenolol can cause severe bradycardia or heart block
  • Clonidine should not be stopped while taking atenolol without careful medical guidance, as stopping clonidine can cause a dangerous rebound rise in blood pressure
  • NSAIDs (e.g. ibuprofen) may reduce the blood-pressure-lowering effect of atenolol
  • Insulin or oral diabetes medicines – atenolol can mask common warning signs of low blood sugar, such as a fast heartbeat

Quick Tips

  • Never stop this medicine suddenly – your doctor will reduce the dose gradually if it needs to be discontinued
  • Monitor your pulse and blood pressure periodically as advised by your doctor
  • Tell your doctor if you notice new or worsening breathlessness or ankle swelling
  • If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar closely, as this medicine can mask signs of hypoglycaemia
  • Rise slowly from sitting or lying down to reduce dizziness

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Normaten 50mg Tablet used for?

Normaten 50mg Tablet is used to treat high blood pressure and angina by slowing the heart rate and reducing the heart’s workload.

Why must I not stop this medicine suddenly?

Stopping a beta-blocker like atenolol abruptly can cause a rebound increase in heart rate and blood pressure, and can worsen angina or even trigger a heart attack in susceptible patients – your doctor will taper the dose if it needs to be stopped.

Can I take this medicine if I have asthma?

Beta-blockers, even beta-1 selective ones like atenolol, need caution in people with asthma or reactive airway disease, as they can potentially trigger bronchospasm – discuss this carefully with your doctor.

Will this medicine affect my exercise capacity?

Atenolol lowers your heart rate, so you may notice you cannot reach the same peak heart rate during exercise as before. Discuss any concerns about physical activity with your doctor.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Normaten 50mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue as normal. Do not double the dose.
