Overview

Novonorm 2mg Tablet contains repaglinide 2mg, a meglitinide-class oral medicine used to help control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes, taken shortly before meals as part of a “prandial glucose regulator” approach.

Repaglinide works by stimulating the pancreas to release more insulin in response to a meal. Its effect is rapid in onset and short in duration, matching the natural rise and fall of blood sugar around eating, which helps control the after-meal blood glucose spike.

How it Works

Repaglinide binds to specific receptors on the beta cells of the pancreas, causing potassium channels to close and calcium channels to open. This triggers the release of insulin already stored in the pancreas. Because this action is quick and short-lived, repaglinide closely mimics the body’s normal insulin response to eating a meal.

Directions for Use

Take Novonorm 2mg Tablet within about 30 minutes before a main meal, swallowing the tablet with water. If you skip a meal, skip that dose of the medicine; if you add an extra meal, take an extra dose before it, following the principle “no meal, no dose – extra meal, extra dose,” always as guided by your doctor.

Dosage

Dosing with Novonorm 2mg Tablet is individualised based on your blood glucose response, usually starting at a low dose before each main meal and adjusted by your doctor over time, with typical maintenance doses given before two to four meals a day, up to a maximum daily dose set by your doctor. The specific strength prescribed to you reflects the dose your doctor has determined is right for your blood sugar control.

Shelf Life

Side Effects

  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia)
  • Weight gain
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Stomach discomfort

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to repaglinide or any ingredient in this product
  • Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis
  • Severe liver impairment
  • Concomitant use with gemfibrozil, which significantly increases repaglinide levels and the risk of severe hypoglycaemia

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Gemfibrozil substantially raises repaglinide blood levels and increases hypoglycaemia risk – this combination should be avoided
  • CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g. clarithromycin, itraconazole) may increase repaglinide levels, while inducers (e.g. rifampicin) may reduce its effect
  • Other glucose-lowering medicines or insulin can have an additive effect, increasing the risk of low blood sugar
  • Alcohol can increase the risk and severity of hypoglycaemia when combined with repaglinide

Quick Tips

  • Take your dose shortly before eating, and skip the dose if you skip that meal
  • Carry a fast-acting source of sugar with you in case of low blood sugar symptoms
  • Check your blood glucose as advised by your doctor to monitor control
  • Be aware of hypoglycaemia symptoms such as sweating, shakiness, and confusion, and act promptly if they occur
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you take, particularly gemfibrozil or other fibrates
