Overview

Opti-Free PureMoist Multi-Purpose Disinfecting Solution is a sterile, buffered contact lens care solution manufactured by Alcon. It is formulated for use with soft contact lenses, including silicone hydrogel lenses, and is supplied as an over-the-counter lens care product in a bottle with a screw cap. It is a lens care solution and not an eye drop, so it is not intended to be put directly into the eye.

The formulation contains two disinfecting preservatives, POLYQUAD (polyquaternium-1) at 0.001% and ALDOX (myristamidopropyl dimethylamine) at 0.0005%, together with HydraGlyde Moisture Matrix, a proprietary Alcon blend. Buffering agents are included to keep the solution at a stable pH. Because it is a multi-purpose system, a single bottle is designed to be used across the rinsing, cleaning, disinfecting and storing steps of a daily lens care routine, so separate saline and cleaning bottles are generally not required.

Contact lens solutions are not interchangeable, and the solution you choose should match the lens type and care routine recommended by your eye care professional. This product is not intended for heat (thermal) disinfection and should always be used with fresh solution in a clean lens case. Please check the packaging for the pack size supplied and read the leaflet inside the carton before the first use.

Directions for Use

Step 1: Wash and rinse your hands thoroughly and dry them with a clean, lint-free towel before handling your lenses.

Step 2: Remove one lens, wet each side thoroughly with the solution, and rub each side gently for 10 seconds (a total rubbing time of 20 seconds).

Step 3: Rinse each side of the lens for 10 seconds (about 20 seconds in total) with a steady stream of fresh solution.

Step 4: Fill your lens case with fresh solution, place the lenses in the case, close it, and leave the lenses to soak overnight or for at least 6 hours. After soaking, the lenses are ready to wear. If any debris remains on a lens, rinse it with fresh solution before insertion.

Step 5: Lenses may stay in the unopened lens case for up to 30 days. After that time, clean and disinfect them again with fresh solution before wear. Always discard the solution left in the lens case after each use, and replace the cap on the bottle straight after use.

Dosage

Not applicable — this is a contact lens care solution and not a medicine, so there is no dose. Use enough fresh solution to wet, rub and rinse each lens, and to fully cover the lenses in the case every time they are stored. Never reuse old solution or top up solution that is already in the lens case.

Shelf Life

Use before the expiry date printed on the packaging. After the bottle is first opened, Alcon labelling states that any remaining solution should be discarded after six months; always follow the discard period printed on your own pack.

Storage Instructions

Store the bottle at room temperature, ideally below 25 °C, with the cap tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. Do not let the bottle tip touch your fingers, your lenses, or any other surface, and do not transfer the solution into another container.

Side Effects

  • Common: Temporary stinging, burning or a mildly irritated feeling in the eye when lenses are inserted, particularly if lenses were not rinsed after soaking.
  • Common: Mild redness, watering, or a feeling of dryness or discomfort while wearing lenses.
  • Common: Temporary blurred vision after lens insertion.
  • Serious: Eye pain, marked or persistent redness, sensitivity to light, discharge, swelling of the eyelids or a sudden change in vision. Remove your lenses and seek urgent care, as these signs can point to an eye infection, injury to the cornea or a serious reaction.
  • Serious: Swelling of the face or lips, or difficulty breathing. This is a rare allergic reaction and needs emergency medical attention.

Contraindications

  • Do not use if you are allergic to any ingredient in the solution, including polyquaternium-1 or myristamidopropyl dimethylamine.
  • Not for use with heat (thermal) disinfection.
  • Do not put the solution directly into the eyes as an eye drop or eye wash.
  • Do not wear contact lenses while you have an eye infection, injury or inflammation until an eye care professional confirms it is safe.
  • Do not use if the cap or seal is damaged, or if the solution looks cloudy or discoloured.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Do not mix this solution with other lens care solutions, cleaners or peroxide-based systems in the same lens case or routine unless your eye care professional advises it.
  • If you use prescribed eye drops or ointments, ask your eye care professional about the timing in relation to lens wear, as some eye medicines can be absorbed by soft lenses.
  • Speak to your eye care professional before changing from one lens care solution to another.
  • No food interactions are known.

Quick Tips

  • Always use fresh solution and never top up the solution already in your lens case.
  • Rub and rinse every lens each time, even when the lenses look clean.
  • Replace your lens case regularly as advised by your eye care professional, and let it air-dry after rinsing it with fresh solution.
  • Keep the bottle tip clean and recap the bottle straight after use to avoid contamination.
  • Write the date you first opened the bottle on the label so you know when to discard it.
  • Never rinse, soak or store lenses or the lens case in tap water, as water can carry microorganisms that may harm the eye.
