Overview

Pharmaniaga Erythromycin 200mg/5ml Suspension is a prescription-only medicine (POM) presented as an oral suspension, with Erythromycin 200mg/5mL (as erythromycin ethylsuccinate/stearate, per 5mL) as its active ingredient content.

This page is limited to product, safety and handling information, in line with Malaysian rules on prescription medicine information for the public. Your prescriber or pharmacist is the right source for anything beyond that, together with the leaflet inside the pack.

Through DoctorOnCall, this product is supplied after an online consultation with a licensed doctor and a valid prescription, and it is checked by a registered pharmacist before dispensing. Take it exactly as prescribed, and speak to your doctor before stopping, changing the dose, or starting any other medicine alongside it.

Directions for Use

Shake Pharmaniaga Erythromycin 200mg/5ml Suspension well before each use to ensure the dose is evenly mixed, and measure the dose accurately using the measuring spoon or oral syringe provided rather than a regular household spoon. Erythromycin generally causes more gastrointestinal upset than newer macrolide antibiotics, so it is usually best taken on an empty stomach (about 1 hour before or 2 hours after food) unless it causes stomach discomfort, in which case it may be taken with food instead.

Dosage

The dose of Pharmaniaga Erythromycin 200mg/5ml Suspension is calculated by your doctor based on body weight and the type and severity of infection, and is usually given in divided doses several times a day for a course lasting about 5-10 days. Always use the measuring spoon or oral syringe provided, and complete the full course exactly as prescribed, even if symptoms improve early.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Once reconstituted or opened, the suspension is generally only stable for a limited period (commonly around 14 days) – check the label or ask your pharmacist for the specific in-use shelf life and discard any unused suspension after this time.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children. If refrigeration is recommended on the product label after reconstitution, store in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and do not freeze.

Side Effects

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Loss of appetite
  • Temporary hearing loss (at high doses)
  • Skin rash or itching

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to erythromycin or other macrolide antibiotics
  • History of liver problems (e.g. jaundice) associated with previous erythromycin use
  • Caution required in patients with a known heart rhythm abnormality (QT prolongation)
  • Caution required in infants under a few weeks old, due to a reported association with a stomach-narrowing condition (pyloric stenosis) – discuss with your doctor

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Erythromycin can significantly increase blood levels of many other medicines by affecting their breakdown in the liver, including certain statins, warfarin, and theophylline
  • Other medicines that prolong the QT interval (e.g. certain antiarrhythmics, antipsychotics) may increase the risk of serious heart rhythm problems when combined
  • Ergot derivatives should be avoided with erythromycin due to the risk of ergotism
  • Antacids may reduce absorption if taken at the same time – space doses apart where possible

Quick Tips

  • Shake the bottle well before every dose to mix the suspension evenly
  • Use only the measuring spoon or oral syringe provided – a kitchen teaspoon can give an inaccurate dose
  • Give on an empty stomach where possible, but with food if it upsets the stomach
  • Complete the full course of antibiotics exactly as prescribed, even if symptoms improve early
  • Note the in-use expiry date after opening or reconstitution, and discard any unused suspension after that time
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines being taken, as erythromycin interacts with many drugs

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Erythromycin 200mg/5mL (as erythromycin ethylsuccinate/stearate, per 5mL)
