Overview

Physiotens 0.2mg Tablet contains moxonidine 0.2mg, a centrally-acting antihypertensive medicine that acts on imidazoline receptors in the brain to lower blood pressure. It is used to treat mild to moderate essential hypertension, usually when other antihypertensive classes have not achieved adequate control or are not suitable.

Moxonidine works mainly in the brainstem, where it stimulates imidazoline I1 receptors to reduce sympathetic nervous system activity. This lowers the tone of blood vessels throughout the body, reducing peripheral resistance and blood pressure.

How it Works

Moxonidine selectively stimulates imidazoline I1 receptors in the rostral ventrolateral medulla of the brainstem, an area that regulates sympathetic nervous system outflow. By reducing sympathetic activity, moxonidine decreases peripheral vascular resistance, which lowers blood pressure without a significant reflex increase in heart rate.

Directions for Use

Take Physiotens 0.2mg Tablet at about the same time each day, with or without food, swallowing the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, especially if you are also taking a beta-blocker, as abrupt discontinuation can cause a rebound rise in blood pressure and heart rate – your doctor will advise on tapering the dose if treatment needs to be stopped.

Dosage

The usual starting dose of Physiotens 0.2mg Tablet is 0.2mg once daily in the morning, which your doctor may increase gradually, usually up to a maximum of 0.6mg daily (given as a single dose or divided into two doses), depending on your blood pressure response. Your doctor will individualise the dose and monitor your progress, especially if you have kidney impairment.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Beta-blockers and other blood-pressure-lowering medicines can increase the blood-pressure-lowering effect – abrupt discontinuation of moxonidine while on a beta-blocker can cause rebound hypertension
  • Sedatives, tranquillisers, and alcohol may increase drowsiness when combined with moxonidine
  • Tricyclic antidepressants may reduce the blood-pressure-lowering effect of moxonidine
  • Other centrally-acting medicines may add to sedative side effects

Quick Tips

  • Never stop this medicine suddenly, particularly if you are also on a beta-blocker – your doctor will guide you on tapering the dose
  • Take at the same time each day, preferably in the morning, to build a routine
  • Monitor your blood pressure regularly as advised by your doctor
  • Be cautious with alcohol and sedating medicines, as they can add to drowsiness

  • Keep all follow-up appointments so your doctor can adjust your dose safely

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Physiotens 0.2mg Tablet used for?

Physiotens 0.2mg Tablet is used to treat mild to moderate high blood pressure, either alone or together with other blood pressure medicines. Your doctor will confirm the specific reason it has been prescribed for you.

Why can’t I stop taking this medicine suddenly?

Stopping moxonidine abruptly, especially if you are also taking a beta-blocker, can cause a rebound increase in blood pressure and heart rate. If your doctor decides to stop this medicine, the dose will usually be reduced gradually.

Can I take this medicine with a beta-blocker?

Moxonidine can be combined with a beta-blocker under your doctor’s supervision, but if both are being stopped, the beta-blocker should generally be withdrawn first and moxonidine several days later, to avoid rebound effects. Always follow your doctor’s specific instructions.

Will this medicine make me feel drowsy?

Moxonidine can cause dizziness or drowsiness, particularly when you first start taking it. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how this medicine affects you, and be cautious with alcohol.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Physiotens 0.2mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose, and never stop the medicine on your own even after a missed dose.
