Overview

Piascledine Capsule is a hard capsule containing 300mg of avocado and soybean unsaponifiables (ASU), developed by Laboratoires Expanscience of France and widely known as Piascledine 300. Each pack contains 30 capsules, which is a 30-day supply at the usual dose of one capsule daily. Please refer to the product label/packaging for the full list of ingredients, including the capsule shell and excipients.

Unsaponifiables are the fraction of a plant oil that remains after the oil is processed into soap, and they contain plant sterols, tocopherols and other lipid compounds. In Piascledine, the active substance is a mixture of approximately one-third avocado unsaponifiables and two-thirds soybean unsaponifiables, which corresponds to about 100mg from avocado and 200mg from soybean in each 300mg capsule. Piascledine is registered as a medicinal product in several countries and is generally taken with medical guidance for joint-related concerns.

Any effect of Piascledine develops gradually rather than immediately, so it is usually taken daily over a period of weeks to months and reviewed with a doctor. Because it is made from soybean and avocado extracts, it is not suitable for people allergic to soy or avocado. Rare cases of raised liver enzymes have been reported, so speak with a doctor or pharmacist before starting if you have liver problems or take other medicines.

Directions for Use

Take one capsule daily with a glass of water, in the middle of a meal. Swallow the capsule whole; do not open, chew or crush it. Take it at around the same time each day and follow the directions on the label or the advice of your doctor or pharmacist.

Dosage

Adults: 1 capsule (300mg) once daily with a meal, or as directed by your doctor.

Do not take more than one capsule a day unless instructed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, do not take two capsules together to make up for it; continue with your usual dose the next day. Piascledine is not recommended for children and adolescents.

Storage Instructions

Store in a cool, dry place below the temperature stated on the label, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the capsules in their original packaging until use and keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild digestive discomfort such as nausea, stomach pain, bloating or diarrhoea.
  • Common: Burping or regurgitation with an oily or fatty taste; taking the capsule in the middle of a meal may help.
  • Rare: Increases in liver enzymes (transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, gamma-GT) detected on blood tests.
  • Serious: Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing. Stop taking the capsules and seek medical help immediately.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy or hypersensitivity to avocado or soybean unsaponifiables, or to any other ingredient of the capsule.
  • Allergy to soy or soy products, or to avocado.
  • Children and adolescents.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding, unless specifically advised by a doctor, because safety data are limited.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • No clinically significant drug interactions with avocado and soybean unsaponifiables are well established; however, always tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and supplements you take.
  • Warfarin and other anticoagulants: Avocado has been reported to affect the response to warfarin; if you take an anticoagulant, inform your doctor before starting, as INR monitoring may be advised.
  • Medicines that may affect the liver: Because rare increases in liver enzymes have been reported, inform your doctor if you take other medicines known to affect the liver.
  • Food: Take the capsule in the middle of a meal to improve tolerance and reduce oily-tasting regurgitation.

Quick Tips

  • Take the capsule in the middle of your main meal to reduce oily burping and stomach upset.
  • Swallow the capsule whole with water; do not open or chew it.
  • Be patient and consistent, as any effect develops gradually over weeks rather than days.
  • Check with your doctor or pharmacist first if you have a soy or avocado allergy.
  • Tell your doctor you are taking Piascledine if you need blood tests, especially liver function tests.
  • Continue the exercise, weight management and other measures recommended by your doctor for your joints.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Speak with a doctor or pharmacist before use if you have liver disease or abnormal liver function tests, a known allergy to soy, peanuts or avocado, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or take warfarin or other regular medicines. Your doctor may check your liver function if you take Piascledine over a long period. Keep to one capsule daily unless advised otherwise.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: See a doctor if your joint pain is severe, sudden, or comes with swelling, redness, warmth, fever or reduced movement, or if your symptoms do not improve after several weeks of regular use. Stop taking the capsules and seek medical help immediately if you develop signs of an allergic reaction, or symptoms such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine or persistent abdominal pain.
