Overview

Plendil 5mg Tablet contains felodipine 5mg, a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), taken as a once-daily extended-release tablet.

Felodipine works by relaxing the smooth muscle in the walls of blood vessels, which widens the vessels and lowers the resistance the heart has to pump against, reducing blood pressure with minimal direct effect on the heart’s own rhythm or pumping strength.

How it Works

Felodipine selectively blocks L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle, reducing calcium entry into these cells. This relaxes and widens the arteries (vasodilation), lowering peripheral resistance and blood pressure, with much less effect on the heart muscle or its electrical conduction compared with non-dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers.

Directions for Use

Take Plendil 5mg Tablet once daily, in the morning, with or without a light meal, but avoid grapefruit or grapefruit juice. Swallow the extended-release tablet whole with water – do not crush, chew, or split it, as this can release the entire dose at once instead of gradually over the day.

Dosage

The usual starting dose of Plendil 5mg Tablet is 5mg once daily, which your doctor may increase up to 10mg daily depending on your blood pressure response. Your doctor will determine the right dose for you and may adjust it gradually.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

  • Significant aortic stenosis (use with caution and specialist guidance)

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Grapefruit and grapefruit juice significantly increase felodipine blood levels and should be avoided entirely
  • CYP3A4 inhibitors such as itraconazole and erythromycin can increase felodipine levels and its blood-pressure-lowering effect
  • CYP3A4 inducers such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, and rifampicin can reduce felodipine’s effectiveness
  • Other blood pressure medicines may increase the risk of excessively low blood pressure when combined

Quick Tips

  • Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice completely while on this medicine
  • Swallow the tablet whole – never crush, chew, or split it
  • Monitor for ankle swelling and report it to your doctor if troublesome
  • Maintain good oral hygiene, as calcium channel blockers can occasionally cause gum swelling

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Plendil 5mg Tablet used for?

Plendil 5mg Tablet is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), helping to reduce the long-term risk of stroke, heart attack, and kidney problems.

Why must I avoid grapefruit with this medicine?

Grapefruit and grapefruit juice interfere with how the body breaks down felodipine, which can raise its blood levels substantially and increase the risk of side effects like low blood pressure and swelling.

Can I crush or split the tablet if I have trouble swallowing it?

No, this is an extended-release tablet designed to release felodipine gradually over the day. Crushing, chewing, or splitting it can cause the full dose to be released at once, which is unsafe.

Why are my ankles swelling since starting this medicine?

Ankle or leg swelling is a common side effect of felodipine caused by its effect on blood vessels. It is usually not dangerous, but tell your doctor if it is bothersome or severe.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Plendil 5mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue as normal. Do not double the dose.
