Overview

Plendil 2.5mg Tablet contains felodipine 2.5mg in an extended-release formulation, a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).

Felodipine works by blocking calcium channels in the smooth muscle of blood vessel walls, preventing calcium from entering these cells. This relaxes and widens blood vessels, lowering blood pressure and reducing the workload on the heart.

How it Works

Felodipine selectively blocks L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle, with little effect on the heart muscle itself. By limiting calcium influx, it relaxes the arterial walls, reducing peripheral vascular resistance and lowering blood pressure in a sustained way over 24 hours due to its extended-release design.

Directions for Use

Take Plendil 2.5mg Tablet once daily, in the morning, with or without food, though a light meal is preferred over a very high-fat meal. Swallow the extended-release tablet whole with a glass of water; do not crush, chew, or split it, as this can release the medicine too quickly. Avoid grapefruit juice while taking this medicine.

Dosage

The usual starting dose of Plendil 2.5mg Tablet is 2.5-5mg once daily, which your doctor may increase up to a maximum of 10mg once daily depending on your blood pressure response. Always take the exact dose prescribed by your doctor, as felodipine is individualised to each patient’s blood pressure control.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g. erythromycin, itraconazole, ketoconazole) can raise felodipine levels
  • Strong CYP3A4 inducers (e.g. carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifampicin, St John’s Wort) can reduce felodipine’s effectiveness
  • Other blood pressure medicines may increase the risk of low blood pressure

Quick Tips

  • Swallow the extended-release tablet whole – never crush, chew, or split it
  • Completely avoid grapefruit juice and grapefruit products while on this medicine
  • Take at the same time each morning to build a consistent routine
  • Report new or worsening ankle swelling to your doctor, though this is a common and usually harmless effect

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Plendil 2.5mg Tablet used for?

Plendil 2.5mg Tablet is used to treat high blood pressure by relaxing and widening blood vessels.

Why must I avoid grapefruit juice with this medicine?

Grapefruit juice blocks an enzyme that normally breaks down felodipine, causing much higher levels of the medicine in your blood and increasing the risk of side effects such as low blood pressure and flushing.

Why are my ankles swelling since starting this medicine?

Ankle or foot swelling is a common effect of calcium channel blockers like felodipine, caused by changes in blood vessel pressure rather than fluid retention from the heart or kidneys. Mention it to your doctor if it bothers you or worsens.

Can I crush the tablet if I have trouble swallowing?

No, this extended-release tablet must be swallowed whole. Crushing, chewing, or splitting it can cause the medicine to be released too quickly, increasing the risk of side effects.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Plendil 2.5mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
