Potrelease TR 600mg Tablet

Potrelease TR 600mg Tablet contains potassium chloride in a sustained (timed) release formulation, used to prevent or treat low blood potassium levels (hypokalemia). It is commonly prescribed for patients at risk of potassium loss, such as those taking certain diuretics (water tablets) for high blood pressure or heart failure, or those with inadequate dietary potassium intake or increased potassium losses from other medical conditions.

Because potassium levels must be kept within a narrow, safe range and both low and high potassium can affect heart rhythm, Potrelease TR 600mg Tablet is a prescription-only medicine in Malaysia. It should only be started after a doctor has assessed your blood potassium level and kidney function, for example through an online consultation with DoctorOnCall, and treatment is generally monitored with periodic blood tests.

Potassium chloride replenishes the body’s potassium stores, restoring blood potassium to within the normal range needed for proper nerve conduction, muscle contraction (including the heart muscle), and overall electrolyte balance. The sustained-release formulation gradually releases potassium as the tablet passes through the digestive tract, which helps reduce the risk of a high local concentration of potassium irritating the stomach lining compared with an immediate-release form.

Take Potrelease TR exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water; do not crush, chew, or break it, as this destroys the sustained-release mechanism and can cause stomach irritation or an unsafe, rapid release of potassium. Take it with or after food to further reduce the chance of stomach upset, and remain upright (avoid lying down immediately) for a short while after taking it.

Dosage is individualised by your doctor based on your blood potassium level, the underlying reason for supplementation, and your kidney function, and is usually taken once or a few times a day. Regular blood tests are used to monitor your potassium level and adjust the dose as needed; do not change your dose without your doctor’s advice. Potrelease TR tablets remain stable until the expiry date printed on the packaging when stored correctly in their original packaging. Do not use the tablets after the expiry date.

• Existing hyperkalemia (high blood potassium)
• Severe kidney impairment or kidney failure, which reduces the body’s ability to remove excess potassium
• Untreated Addison’s disease or other conditions causing the body to retain potassium
• Conditions with delayed gastrointestinal transit that increase the risk of the tablet lodging in the gut
• Concurrent use with potassium-sparing diuretics without close monitoring
• Known hypersensitivity to potassium chloride or any ingredient in the tablet

• ACE inhibitors or ARBs (common blood pressure medicines), which can raise potassium levels and increase the risk of hyperkalemia when combined
• Potassium-sparing diuretics such as spironolactone or amiloride, which add to the risk of high potassium
• NSAIDs (e.g. ibuprofen, diclofenac), which can reduce the kidneys’ ability to excrete potassium
• Salt substitutes that contain potassium chloride, which add to your total potassium intake
• Other potassium supplements taken at the same time

• Attend all blood test appointments your doctor schedules to monitor your potassium level
• Report tingling, numbness, muscle weakness, or an irregular heartbeat to your doctor immediately
• Never crush, chew, or split the tablet — swallow it whole
• Take with a full glass of water and remain upright for a while afterwards
• Tell your doctor about all diuretics, blood pressure medicines, or salt substitutes you are using
• Do not take extra tablets to make up for a missed dose

Potrelease TR 600mg Tablet is prescribed to correct or prevent low potassium levels and requires ongoing monitoring, since both too little and too much potassium can seriously affect heart rhythm. Your doctor may periodically check your blood potassium and kidney function while you are on this medicine, particularly if you are also taking diuretics or other medicines that affect potassium levels, and may adjust your dose based on these results.
