Overview

Pulmicort 250mcg/ml Respule contains budesonide 250mcg/ml, an inhaled corticosteroid used as regular maintenance treatment to prevent and control asthma symptoms in adults and children who need nebulised therapy. It is not a reliever medicine and does not work fast enough to treat a sudden asthma attack.

Budesonide works directly on the lining of the airways, reducing swelling and inflammation over time so the airways become less sensitive and less likely to narrow when triggered.

How it Works

Budesonide is a topically-acting corticosteroid that, once nebulised and inhaled into the airways, reduces the activity of inflammatory cells and chemical mediators involved in asthma. With regular use, this lowers airway inflammation and hyper-responsiveness, reducing the frequency and severity of asthma symptoms.

Directions for Use

Pulmicort 250mcg/ml Respule is for nebulisation only – it must never be injected or swallowed. Shake the respule gently, open it just before use, and empty the contents into a suitable jet nebuliser chamber as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Rinse your mouth with water afterwards (and wash the face if a mask is used) to reduce the risk of oral thrush and skin irritation.

Dosage

The dose of Pulmicort 250mcg/ml Respule is individualised by your doctor based on age and asthma severity, commonly nebulised once or twice daily. Your doctor may adjust the dose over time to the lowest amount that keeps your asthma well controlled, and will advise how long you need to continue treatment.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Storage Instructions

Store below 25°C, protected from direct light. Keep respules in their protective foil pouch until ready for use, and do not freeze. Use an opened respule promptly, and discard any suspension remaining in a partially used respule.

Side Effects

  • Headache
  • Nausea or upset stomach
  • Throat irritation (with inhaled forms)
  • Cough or hoarseness
  • White patches in the mouth (oral thrush)
  • Increased risk of infections
  • Dizziness
  • Acne or skin thinning (with prolonged use)

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to budesonide or any ingredient in this product
  • Not for use as a rescue treatment during a sudden asthma attack – a fast-acting reliever inhaler is needed instead
  • Active, untreated respiratory tract infections such as tuberculosis or fungal infections require caution and medical assessment first

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Ketoconazole, itraconazole, and other strong CYP3A4 inhibitors can increase budesonide levels in the body
  • Ritonavir and other HIV protease inhibitors may significantly raise budesonide exposure
  • Other corticosteroids (oral, nasal, or topical) used together may increase the overall risk of corticosteroid-related side effects
  • Grapefruit juice may raise budesonide levels and should be used with caution

Quick Tips

  • Rinse your mouth with water after every use to help prevent oral thrush
  • Keep using it regularly for prevention, even when you feel well – it is not for sudden breathlessness
  • Clean and dry your nebuliser equipment as instructed to avoid contamination
  • Keep a fast-acting reliever inhaler on hand for sudden symptoms

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Pulmicort 250mcg/ml Respule used for?

Pulmicort 250mcg/ml Respule is a nebulised corticosteroid used for the regular, ongoing prevention and control of asthma symptoms, not for relieving a sudden attack.

Can I use this respule for a sudden asthma attack?

No, budesonide respules are a preventer medicine and do not act fast enough for a sudden attack. You should use your prescribed fast-acting reliever inhaler and seek medical help if symptoms do not settle.

Why do I need to rinse my mouth after using it?

Rinsing your mouth with water after each dose helps wash away any medicine left in the mouth and throat, reducing the risk of oral thrush and hoarseness.

How long will it take before I notice an improvement?

Some improvement may be seen within a few days, but the full benefit in reducing asthma flare-ups is usually seen after several weeks of regular use.

Can this respule be mixed with other nebuliser solutions?

Only mix it with another medicine if your doctor or pharmacist has specifically advised it and confirmed it is compatible – otherwise use it on its own in the nebuliser.
