Overview

Ranbaxy Rosart 50mg Tablet contains losartan potassium 50mg, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes and diabetic nephropathy. It is also used to reduce the risk of stroke in hypertensive patients with left ventricular hypertrophy (thickening of the heart’s main pumping chamber). Despite the brand name resembling names used for cholesterol medicines, this is not a statin.

Losartan works by blocking the action of angiotensin II, a hormone that normally narrows blood vessels and promotes sodium and water retention. By blocking this effect, losartan allows blood vessels to relax and widen, which lowers blood pressure and reduces the workload on the heart.

How it Works

Losartan selectively blocks the AT1 receptor, preventing angiotensin II from binding and exerting its blood-vessel-narrowing, sodium-retaining, and aldosterone-releasing effects. This relaxes blood vessels, lowers blood pressure, and reduces the pressure-related strain on the kidneys and heart.

Directions for Use

Take Ranbaxy Rosart 50mg Tablet at about the same time every day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without consulting your doctor, even if you feel well, as blood pressure control needs to be continuous.

Dosage

The usual starting dose of Ranbaxy Rosart 50mg Tablet for hypertension is 50mg once daily, which your doctor may adjust up to 100mg daily depending on your blood pressure response, or lower in patients with volume depletion or liver impairment. Always take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, who will individualise the dose to your condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ranbaxy Rosart 50mg Tablet used for?

Ranbaxy Rosart 50mg Tablet contains losartan potassium, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used to treat high blood pressure and to help protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes. Your doctor will confirm the specific reason it has been prescribed for you.

Is Rosart a cholesterol medicine (statin)?

No. Despite the brand name, Rosart contains losartan potassium, which is an angiotensin II receptor blocker used for blood pressure and kidney protection – it is not a statin and does not treat cholesterol.

How long does it take for losartan to work?

Losartan can start lowering blood pressure within a few hours, but the full blood-pressure-lowering effect is usually seen after 3-6 weeks of regular use.

Can I stop taking this medicine if my blood pressure normalises?

No, do not stop without consulting your doctor. High blood pressure often has no symptoms, and stopping suddenly can cause your blood pressure to rise again.

Can I take losartan if I am pregnant or planning pregnancy?

Losartan should not be used during pregnancy as it can harm the developing baby. Speak to your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant.
