Overview

Relcer Gel is an oral gel suspension formulated with three active ingredients: Aluminium Hydroxide, Magnesium Hydroxide, and Oxethazaine. Aluminium Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide belong to the antacid class of ingredients, while Oxethazaine is a local anaesthetic compound. Together, these are combined in a thick, gel-based suspension that is taken by mouth rather than applied to the skin.

The product is supplied as a 100ml oral suspension in a bottle, with the gel-like consistency designed to coat the lining of the stomach and oesophagus as it passes through. Because it is a suspension, the ingredients can settle over time, which is why the bottle needs to be shaken well before each dose is measured out.

Relcer Gel is sold in Malaysia as an over-the-counter oral gel, distinct from topical antacid or pain-relief products in that it is swallowed rather than applied externally. The combination of two antacid salts with a local anaesthetic in a single formulation distinguishes it from single-ingredient antacid products available on the same pharmacy shelf.

Directions for Use

Shake the bottle well before each use, as the suspension can settle at the bottom of the bottle when left standing. Measure out the recommended dose using a proper measuring cup or spoon rather than an ordinary household spoon, to ensure accurate dosing.

Take the measured dose by mouth, generally between meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a doctor or pharmacist. Do not take other oral medicines within 1 to 2 hours of taking Relcer Gel, as the antacid content can interfere with the absorption of certain other medicines taken at the same time (see Drug / Food Interactions).

Dosage

The typical adult dose of Relcer Gel is 5 to 10 ml, taken 3 to 4 times a day, generally between meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a doctor or pharmacist. Always use the measuring device provided or a proper oral dosing cup to measure the dose accurately.

Do not exceed the maximum dose stated on the product packaging. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose, in which case skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule; do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you find you are needing to use the product regularly for more than 2 weeks, speak with a doctor before continuing.

Shelf Life

Use before the expiry date printed on the bottle and outer packaging. Do not use the product if the expiry date has passed, and discard any unused portion according to the timeframe stated on the label once opened, if specified.

Storage Instructions

Store Relcer Gel below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep the bottle tightly capped when not in use, and shake well before each use as ingredients may settle during storage.

Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze the product, and check that the suspension has not visibly separated, discoloured, or developed an unusual odour before use.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild constipation, related to the aluminium hydroxide content.
  • Common: Mild nausea or an altered sense of taste after dosing.
  • Common: A temporary numb or tingling feeling in the mouth or throat shortly after swallowing, related to the local anaesthetic component.
  • Common: Dry mouth or mild dizziness in some individuals.
  • Serious: Signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the lips, face, or throat, difficulty breathing, or a widespread rash, which require immediate medical attention.

Contraindications

  • Do not use in individuals with a known allergy or hypersensitivity to Aluminium Hydroxide, Magnesium Hydroxide, Oxethazaine, or any other ingredient in the product.
  • Do not use in individuals with severe kidney impairment, as aluminium and magnesium salts can accumulate in the body when kidney function is significantly reduced.
  • Do not use in individuals with a bowel obstruction or a diagnosed but unexplained abdominal condition, without first consulting a doctor.
  • Because the product produces a numbing effect in the mouth and throat, avoid eating or drinking hot food or beverages immediately after dosing, as reduced sensation may increase the risk of burns.
  • Use with caution in pregnant or breastfeeding women, and only under the guidance of a doctor or pharmacist.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Aluminium Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide can reduce the absorption of a number of oral medicines, including certain antibiotics (such as tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones), iron supplements, and some heart and thyroid medicines, if taken at the same time.
  • Leave a gap of at least 1 to 2 hours between taking Relcer Gel and taking other oral medicines, or check with a pharmacist for guidance specific to your other medicines.
  • Because Oxethazaine has a local anaesthetic effect on the mouth and throat, avoid consuming hot food or drinks shortly after dosing, as reduced sensation in this area may increase the risk of accidental burns or difficulty swallowing.
  • Magnesium-containing antacids may increase the effect of certain other medicines by altering urine pH; speak with a pharmacist if you take regular prescription medicine alongside this product.

Quick Tips

  • Always shake the bottle thoroughly before measuring a dose, as the suspension settles when it stands.
  • Use the measuring cup or dosing device that comes with the bottle rather than an ordinary kitchen spoon.
  • Rinse the measuring device with water after each use and let it dry before the next dose.
  • Keep the bottle cap tightly closed between doses to help prevent contamination and keep the suspension consistent.
  • Note the date you opened the bottle on the label, so you can track how long it has been open.
  • Store the bottle where it will not be exposed to direct sunlight or heat, such as near a stove or window.
