Overview

Renvela 800mg Tablet contains sevelamer carbonate 800mg, a non-calcium phosphate binder used to control high blood phosphate (hyperphosphataemia) in adults with chronic kidney disease, including patients on dialysis and some who are not yet on dialysis.

Sevelamer works by binding to phosphate from food within the digestive tract, forming a complex that is not absorbed and is eliminated in the stool. This reduces the amount of phosphate absorbed into the bloodstream, helping to keep blood phosphate levels within a healthier range.

How it Works

Sevelamer carbonate is a non-absorbed polymer that binds dietary phosphate ions within the gastrointestinal tract, forming a complex that passes through and out of the body in the stool rather than being absorbed. By reducing phosphate absorption, it helps lower elevated blood phosphate levels associated with chronic kidney disease.

Directions for Use

Renvela 800mg Tablet must always be taken with meals or substantial snacks, as it works by binding phosphate from the food you eat – it will not work effectively if taken on an empty stomach. Swallow the tablets whole with plenty of water; do not crush, chew, or split them, as they are large tablets designed to be swallowed intact.

Dosage

The dose of Renvela 800mg Tablet is individualised based on your blood phosphate level and whether you are on dialysis, typically taken as one or more tablets three times daily with meals. Your doctor will adjust your dose based on regular phosphate level monitoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Renvela 800mg Tablet used for?

Renvela 800mg Tablet is used to control high blood phosphate levels (hyperphosphataemia) in adults with chronic kidney disease, including those on dialysis.

Why must I take this medicine with food?

Sevelamer works by binding to phosphate from the food you eat within your digestive tract. Taking it on an empty stomach means there is little dietary phosphate for it to bind, so it will not work as intended.

Can I crush the tablet if I have difficulty swallowing it?

No, this tablet should be swallowed whole with plenty of water. It is a large tablet by design, and crushing or chewing it is not recommended – speak to your doctor if you have persistent difficulty swallowing it.

Do I need extra vitamins while taking this medicine?

Long-term use may reduce absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. Your doctor may check your vitamin levels periodically and recommend supplementation if needed.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Renvela 800mg Tablet?

If you miss a dose, skip it and take your next dose with your next meal – do not take a double dose. If you regularly skip meals or doses, discuss this with your doctor.
