Overview

Requip 0.25mg Tablet contains ropinirole 0.25mg in an immediate-release formulation, a non-ergot dopamine agonist used to treat Parkinson’s disease and restless legs syndrome (RLS). Unlike the once-daily prolonged-release form, this tablet is generally taken multiple times a day for Parkinson’s disease, or as a single dose before bedtime for RLS.

Ropinirole works by directly stimulating dopamine D2/D3 receptors in the brain, mimicking dopamine’s natural effects. In Parkinson’s disease this improves motor symptoms, while in restless legs syndrome it reduces the uncomfortable urge to move the legs, particularly in the evening and at night.

How it Works

Ropinirole is a non-ergot dopamine agonist that selectively binds to and activates D2 and D3 dopamine receptors. In Parkinson’s disease this compensates for reduced dopamine production in the brain’s striatum, improving movement control. In restless legs syndrome, dopaminergic activity is thought to modulate the sensory-motor pathways responsible for the urge to move the legs.

Directions for Use

Take Requip 0.25mg Tablet with food to help reduce nausea. For Parkinson’s disease, take each dose at the times advised by your doctor throughout the day; for restless legs syndrome, take your dose 1-3 hours before you go to bed. Swallow the tablet whole with water.

Dosage

For Parkinson’s disease, Requip 0.25mg Tablet is usually started at a low dose taken several times a day and increased gradually according to your doctor’s individualised titration schedule. For restless legs syndrome, it is generally taken as a single dose 1-3 hours before bedtime, starting low and adjusted as needed. Your doctor will confirm the schedule that applies to your condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Requip 0.25mg Tablet used for?

Requip 0.25mg Tablet is used to treat Parkinson’s disease and restless legs syndrome (RLS), two different conditions in which ropinirole is dosed differently depending on which one your doctor is treating.

How is dosing different for Parkinson’s disease compared with restless legs syndrome?

For Parkinson’s disease, ropinirole is usually taken multiple times throughout the day. For restless legs syndrome, it is generally taken as a single dose 1-3 hours before bedtime, since RLS symptoms are typically worse in the evening and night.

Can I switch between this tablet and the once-daily prolonged-release form on my own?

No, the immediate-release and prolonged-release (PD/XL) forms are not directly interchangeable. Any switch between formulations should only be done under your doctor’s guidance.

Why does my doctor ask about gambling or shopping habits during follow-up?

Dopamine agonists such as ropinirole can rarely cause new compulsive behaviours like gambling, shopping, or hypersexuality. Your doctor checks for this so the dose can be adjusted if needed.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Requip 0.25mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose.
