Overview

Sandoz Baneocin Ointment is an ointment with Neomycin Sulfate (Antibacterial), Bacitracin Zinc (Antibacterial) and White petrolatum (soothing base) declared as its active content. It is supplied in a pack size of 20g.

This is an over-the-counter (OTC) product and can be purchased without a prescription. Only product, safety and handling details are published on this page.

An online consultation with a DoctorOnCall doctor or pharmacist is available for this product, and a registered pharmacist reviews each order before dispatch to Malaysia or Singapore. Follow the directions on the label and on the leaflet inside the pack.

Directions for Use

Clean and dry the affected skin before use. Apply a thin layer of ointment to the affected area once or twice daily, or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist, and cover with a sterile dressing if appropriate. Wash your hands before and after application unless the hands are the treated area. Use only on the specific area indicated and avoid applying to larger areas of broken or denuded skin than directed, as absorption increases when the ointment is used over extensive areas of damaged skin.

Dosage

Not applicable in the conventional oral-medicine sense — Baneocin Ointment is for external, topical use only. As a general guide, apply a thin layer to the affected area once or twice daily, or as specifically directed by a doctor or pharmacist. Treatment courses for topical antibiotics such as this are generally kept short (commonly around 7 days, and product information for this combination advises not exceeding total treatment durations of about 7 days for larger areas due to absorption concerns) — do not use continuously for a prolonged period without medical review, and see a doctor or pharmacist if the infection has not visibly improved within about a week.

Shelf Life

Use Baneocin Ointment before the expiry date printed on the tube and outer carton. Do not use the product if the expiry date has passed, or once a course of treatment for a particular infection is complete — do not keep an opened tube for use on a future, different infection without checking with a pharmacist first.

Storage Instructions

Store at or below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from direct heat and moisture, and keep the tube tightly closed and out of the reach of children. Do not use the ointment beyond the period recommended for your specific course of treatment, even if some product remains in the tube.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild, localised skin irritation, redness, or itching at the site of application.
  • Common: Dryness or mild stinging on application, particularly on broken skin.
  • Serious: Allergic contact sensitisation to neomycin, which is relatively common with repeated or prolonged use and can present as worsening redness, swelling, blistering, or a spreading rash — stop use and seek medical attention if this occurs.
  • Serious: Signs of a more general allergic reaction, such as widespread rash, facial or throat swelling, or difficulty breathing, require immediate medical attention.
  • Serious: Hearing changes (such as ringing in the ears or hearing loss) or signs of a chronic health condition problems, which have been associated with excessive systemic absorption of neomycin when used over large areas of broken or denuded skin for prolonged periods — seek medical advice promptly if these occur.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity or allergy to neomycin, bacitracin, other aminoglycoside antibiotics, or any other ingredient in the ointment.
  • Should not be used to treat extensive or deep wounds, serious burns, or widespread skin conditions without direct medical supervision, due to the increased risk of systemic absorption and toxicity over large areas of denuded skin.
  • Should not be applied inside the ear canal in a patient with a known or suspected perforated eardrum, or instilled into the eyes, due to the risk of ototoxicity and local irritation.
  • Not intended for long-term or indefinite use — treatment should be limited to the course directed by a doctor or pharmacist.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Concurrent use with other topical or systemic aminoglycoside antibiotics should be avoided where possible, as this may increase the overall risk of ototoxicity (hearing damage) and nephrotoxicity (a chronic health condition damage) if significant systemic absorption occurs.
  • Caution is advised if used alongside other medicines known to affect hearing or a chronic health condition function (such as certain diuretics or other nephrotoxic or ototoxic drugs), particularly if the ointment is being used over large areas of broken skin, as the combined risk of toxicity may be increased.
  • No significant food interactions are known for Baneocin Ointment, as it is applied topically rather than taken by mouth.

Quick Tips

  • Use Baneocin only on the specific area your doctor or pharmacist has identified — it is not meant to be used as a general all-purpose wound-cleaning product.
  • Do not use for longer than directed, even if the tube is not finished, to reduce the risk of skin sensitisation and antibiotic resistance.
  • Avoid applying to large areas of broken or denuded skin, deep wounds, or serious burns without direct medical advice.
  • Watch for signs of skin sensitisation (worsening redness, itching, or rash) and stop use promptly if these appear, as neomycin allergy is relatively common.
  • Do not use inside the ears if you have a perforated eardrum, or in the eyes.
  • See a doctor or pharmacist if symptoms have not improved within about a week, or appear to be getting worse, rather than continuing to self-treat.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Baneocin Ointment is a genuine topical antibiotic and should not be used as a general wound-care product. Because neomycin can cause contact sensitisation with repeated use, and because systemic absorption of neomycin and bacitracin can increase with use over large areas of broken skin, treatment should be limited to the smallest area and shortest duration needed, and to the course recommended by a doctor or pharmacist. People with impaired a chronic health condition function, extensive burns, or chronic leg ulcers should use this product only under medical supervision, as they may be at higher risk of systemic absorption and toxicity. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should check with a doctor or pharmacist before use.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Seek medical advice before starting Baneocin if you are unsure whether this product is suitable for your situation, if the affected area is large, deep, or involves a serious burn, or if you have a chronic health condition problems. Stop use and see a doctor promptly if you notice worsening redness, spreading rash, blistering, hearing changes, dizziness, or any other new or worsening symptoms, or if symptoms have not improved within about a week of treatment.
