Overview

Spiriva Respimat 2.5 mcg Inhalation Solution (Refill) is supplied as a solution, with Tiotropium Bromide, delivering 2.5 micrograms per actuation (puff). It is supplied in a pack size of 4ml.

No prescription is required for this product, as it is a non-prescription medicine. This page is limited to product, safety and handling information.

If you would like guidance before buying, you can speak to a doctor or pharmacist through an online consultation on DoctorOnCall. Orders are dispensed by a registered pharmacist and delivered to your address.

Directions for Use

This pack contains only the medicine cartridge for refilling an existing Respimat inhaler device — it does not include a new inhaler unit. Insert the cartridge into your existing Respimat inhaler according to the device’s instructions, or as demonstrated by your doctor or pharmacist, then prime the device before first use of the new cartridge as directed in the patient information leaflet. Use the inhaler once daily, at around the same time each day, taking the number of puffs prescribed by your doctor.

Dosage

The usual maintenance dose for COPD and as add-on therapy for asthma is 2 puffs (5 micrograms total, delivered as 2 x 2.5 micrograms) from the Respimat inhaler once daily, taken at the same time each day. Do not take extra doses or use it more often than prescribed, and always follow your doctor’s specific instructions, as dosing may be individualised.

Shelf Life

When stored correctly and unopened, this refill cartridge is generally stable until the expiry date printed on the carton. Once inserted into the inhaler and in use, the cartridge should be discarded after the period stated in the patient information leaflet, generally around 3 months after first use, even if some solution remains.

Storage Instructions

Store below 25°C, and do not freeze. Keep the cartridge in its original packaging until ready for use, and once inserted into the Respimat inhaler, keep the device as instructed in the patient leaflet. Keep out of the reach and sight of children.

Side Effects

  • Dry mouth
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Constipation
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Blurred vision

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to tiotropium, ipratropium, atropine, or related anticholinergic medicines
  • Not intended for the initial or acute relief of sudden breathlessness or an asthma/COPD attack
  • Narrow-angle glaucoma, unless a doctor has specifically assessed suitability
  • Significant urinary retention or bladder outflow obstruction, unless a doctor has assessed suitability

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Use with caution alongside other anticholinergic (antimuscarinic) medicines, as effects such as dry mouth, constipation, or urinary retention may be increased
  • Inform your doctor if you are using other inhaled medicines for asthma or COPD, so your overall treatment plan can be coordinated
  • Care is needed in patients with glaucoma, prostate enlargement, or bladder outflow problems, who should be reviewed by a doctor before starting or continuing treatment
  • Inform your doctor or pharmacist of all other medicines you are taking before starting this refill

Quick Tips

  • This is a refill cartridge for an existing Respimat inhaler, not a new device — insert it into your current inhaler as instructed
  • Prime the inhaler as directed after inserting a new cartridge, before taking your first dose from it
  • Take your dose at the same time each day for consistent control of symptoms
  • This medicine is for daily maintenance and does not relieve sudden breathlessness — keep a fast-acting reliever inhaler available if prescribed
  • Avoid spraying into the eyes; if this happens, rinse with water and seek advice if vision changes occur
  • Continue regular doctor follow-up to monitor your lung condition and treatment response

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Active ingredient: Tiotropium Bromide, delivering 2.5 micrograms per actuation (puff)
  • Standard pharmaceutical-grade inhalation solution excipients, as listed on the product packaging

Relevant Information

Spiriva Respimat is a long-established maintenance treatment for COPD and, in selected cases, for asthma that remains uncontrolled on other inhaled therapy, and it is intended for regular, ongoing use rather than for immediate relief of sudden symptoms. As a prescription medicine, treatment should begin only after a doctor has assessed the patient’s lung condition, and this refill is intended for patients already established on Spiriva Respimat with an existing, compatible inhaler device; regular medical follow-up helps ensure the treatment remains appropriate and effective over time.
