Sterimar Hypertonic (Blocked Nose) Sea Water Spray

Sterimar Hypertonic (Blocked Nose) Sea Water Spray is a natural, hypertonic seawater nasal spray sourced from the French coast, enriched with trace elements such as magnesium, calcium and potassium. Unlike an isotonic seawater spray, its salt concentration is higher than that of the body’s own fluids, and it does not contain any pharmacologically active decongestant drug. It is an over-the-counter (OTC), drug-free product generally intended for adults and children above 3 years of age, supplied in a 100ml pressurised spray bottle.

Sterimar Hypertonic works through an osmotic effect. Because its salt (sodium chloride and mineral) concentration is higher than that of the fluid inside the cells lining the nose, spraying it onto nasal tissue draws fluid out of the mucosa and into the nasal cavity by osmosis, physically reducing tissue swelling.

Unlike medicated decongestant sprays that work through drug receptors, this hypertonic solution’s action is purely physical, and is not associated with the rebound effect (rhinitis medicamentosa) that can occur with prolonged use of some medicated nasal decongestants.

Blow your nose gently before use if possible. Hold the bottle upright, tilt your head slightly forward, and insert the nozzle just inside one nostril. Press briefly to release the spray and hold for a few seconds, then remove the nozzle and allow the loosened mucus and excess solution to drain out, gently blowing your nose afterwards. Repeat for the other nostril. Avoid tilting the head backwards during use, as this can cause the solution to run down the throat rather than draining from the nose. Wipe the nozzle clean after each use.

As a non-medicated hypertonic seawater spray, there is no fixed pharmacological dose. General usage guidance is one to two sprays into each nostril, two to six times a day, or as needed while nasal congestion or blockage persists. It is generally intended for use by adults and children above 3 years old; for younger children, an isotonic (non-hypertonic) seawater spray, such as a baby-specific formulation, is usually preferred, and a doctor or pharmacist can advise on the most suitable option. If congestion continues for more than one to two weeks, seek medical advice rather than continuing to self-treat.

Use before the expiry date printed on the carton and bottle. As with most multi-dose nasal sprays, check the packaging for any stated period of use after first opening, and discard the bottle after that period (commonly a few months) even if solution remains, or sooner if the solution appears discoloured or the spray mechanism is damaged.

Store below 25°C, away from direct sunlight and heat, and out of reach and sight of children. Keep the bottle upright with the cap closed between uses, and do not freeze. Discard if the nozzle is damaged or the solution appears cloudy or discoloured.

• Common: A mild stinging, tingling or burning sensation in the nose immediately after spraying, due to the higher salt concentration.
• Common: Sneezing or a temporary increase in nasal discharge as mucus loosens.
• Serious: Persistent nasal irritation, nosebleeds, or worsening congestion are uncommon; stop use and seek medical advice if these occur.

• Not for use in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to seawater-based nasal products.
• Not intended for use in the ears or eyes; use only in the nose as directed.

• No clinically significant drug or food interactions are known for this seawater nasal spray, as it is not systemically absorbed.
• It can generally be used together with other nasal medicines, such as a steroid nasal spray, with this hypertonic spray typically used first, before applying the other product, though your pharmacist can advise on the best order for your specific medicines.

• This hypertonic formulation is generally intended for occasional use rather than as a routine daily hygiene spray.
• Keep the head tilted slightly forward, not backward, during use so the solution and mucus drain out of the nose rather than down the throat.
• Use it before a decongestant or steroid nasal spray, if you are also using one.
• For ongoing, everyday use, an isotonic seawater spray is generally preferred over this hypertonic formulation.
• Do not share the bottle and nozzle with other family members.
