Overview

Sterimar Nose Hygiene and Comfort Adult Sea Water Spray is a nasal spray made from filtered natural sea water that has been adjusted to an isotonic concentration. According to the product information, the sea water content is 31.82 ml per 100 ml of solution, with purified water making up the remainder, and it contains natural marine minerals and trace elements such as magnesium, zinc and copper. It is supplied as a medical device in a spray container and is available over the counter.

An isotonic solution has a salt concentration similar to that of the body’s own cells, which is why it is formulated to be gentle on the lining of the nose. The product is described as free from drugs, steroids and preservatives, and the spray is fitted with a nozzle designed to deliver a fine, regular mist. The container is pressurised with an inert propellant that does not leave the container during use, and the pack size is shown on the product page.

Because it is a drug-free sea water spray, it is a product people may keep in their daily routine and carry in a bag. This particular variant is intended for adults, and customers looking for a spray for children should ask our pharmacist team about the Sterimar product made for their age group. Please read the leaflet in the carton, and follow the directions for priming, positioning and cleaning the nozzle after each use.

Directions for Use

On first use, prime the spray by pressing the nozzle briefly once to start the system.

Keep your head straight, gently place the nozzle just inside one nostril, and spray once or twice. Let any excess solution flow out, then blow your nose gently.

Repeat in the other nostril.

For a deeper wash of the nasal cavities, tilt your head to one side, place the nozzle in the upper nostril, and press for a longer, prolonged spray of about 2 to 3 seconds. Let the solution flow out through the lower nostril, then blow your nose gently.

After each use, clean the nozzle with hot water and dry it thoroughly. Replace the protective cap.

Dosage

Adults: one to two sprays in each nostril, 2 to 6 times a day, or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Because the spray contains only natural sea water, it can be used regularly, but please follow the directions on your pack.

If you miss a use, simply spray at the next convenient time; there is no need to double up. See a doctor or pharmacist if nasal symptoms continue, worsen or keep coming back while you are using the spray.

Shelf Life

Use before the expiry date printed on the container and carton. Product information states that the spray is designed to keep the solution preserved after opening, but please follow the instructions printed on your own pack.

Storage Instructions

Store at room temperature and protect from sunlight. This is a pressurised container: do not expose it to temperatures above 50 °C, keep it away from heat, flames and other ignition sources, and do not pierce or burn it, even when empty. Keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild, temporary nasal irritation, stinging or a tingling feeling after spraying.
  • Common: Sneezing, a runny nose or a salty taste at the back of the throat soon after use.
  • Serious: Frequent or persistent nosebleeds, or severe nasal pain. Stop using the spray and see a doctor.
  • Serious: Swelling of the face, lips or tongue, a widespread rash, or difficulty breathing. This is a rare allergic reaction and needs emergency medical attention.

Contraindications

  • Do not use if you are allergic to any component of the spray.
  • Do not use if the container or nozzle is damaged.
  • Do not spray into the eyes or mouth.
  • This adult variant is not intended for infants or young children.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • No interactions with medicines are known for a drug-free sea water spray.
  • If you also use other nasal sprays or nasal medicines, ask a doctor or pharmacist about the best order and timing for using them together.
  • No food interactions are known.

Quick Tips

  • Prime the spray on first use by pressing the nozzle briefly once.
  • Keep your head upright or slightly tilted forward rather than tipped back, so that the solution does not run down the throat.
  • Blow your nose gently and one nostril at a time after spraying, rather than blowing hard.
  • Clean the nozzle with hot water and dry it after every use, and do not share the spray with other people.
  • Keep the protective cap on when not in use and store the container upright, away from heat and sunlight.
  • Carry it in a bag at room temperature, but never leave a pressurised container in a hot car.

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • 100% Natural Sea Water (isotonic solution)
  • Rich in beneficial minerals and trace elements like magnesium, zinc, and copper

Relevant Information

Precautions: Product information indicates that the spray contains no drugs, steroids or preservatives, but people with a history of nasal surgery, frequent nosebleeds or persistent nasal symptoms should check with a doctor before regular use. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, Sterimar product information states the spray is suitable, but you can still speak with a doctor or pharmacist if you have questions. Do not share the container, and do not pierce, burn or heat it.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: See a doctor or pharmacist if nasal symptoms continue for more than about a week, keep returning, or are accompanied by fever, severe facial pain, thick coloured discharge, or nosebleeds. Seek urgent help for swelling of the face or lips or difficulty breathing after using the spray.
