Overview

Sven’s Island Miracle Manuka Medi-Salve Ointment is a natural, honey-based salve made for external use on the skin. It is built around wild harvested manuka honey and blended with kowhai extract, harakeke (New Zealand flax) extract, olive oil, beeswax and calendula oil. The product is described as 100% natural and certified organic where applicable, and is classified as an over-the-counter (OTC) product.

Manuka honey is produced by bees that forage on the manuka bush in New Zealand and is a distinctive ingredient with a dark colour and thick texture. In this salve it is combined with plant extracts and oils that give the ointment a smooth, balm-like body, while beeswax provides firmness so that it stays in place after application. Kowhai and harakeke are native New Zealand plants, and calendula oil is a well-known botanical oil used in skincare.

The salve is intended for external use on the skin and should be kept away from the eyes. Because it contains honey and beeswax, it is not suitable for anyone with allergies to bee products. Pack sizes can vary between listings, so please check the product page and the printed label for the exact size you are ordering.

Directions for Use

Wash your hands and clean the skin area gently, then pat it dry. Take a small amount of salve with a clean fingertip or clean spatula and apply a thin layer to the skin area as directed on the label. Gently spread it so that it covers the area evenly.

Replace the lid tightly after each use. Use a clean fingertip or spatula every time, and do not return used salve to the tin. Wash your hands after application. Avoid contact with the eyes. For deep, bleeding or heavily contaminated wounds, seek medical advice rather than applying the salve.

Dosage

Apply a thin layer to the skin as directed on the product label. This is a topical salve, so there is no oral dose and no systemic daily dose. Use only as often as the label directs, and avoid applying thick layers or covering large areas of skin.

If you miss an application, simply apply at the next usual time without doubling up. If skin irritation develops or the skin condition continues or worsens, stop using the salve and speak with a doctor or pharmacist.

Storage Instructions

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat, as high temperatures can soften or melt the salve. Keep the lid tightly closed and keep out of the reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild skin irritation, redness, itching, stinging or a warm sensation at the application site.
  • Common: A sticky or greasy feel on the skin, and possible staining of clothing or dressings.
  • Serious: Signs of an allergic reaction such as spreading rash, hives, swelling of the lips, face or tongue, or difficulty breathing. Stop use and get urgent medical help, because honey, beeswax and plant extracts such as calendula can cause allergy in sensitive people.
  • Serious: Increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pain or pus at the treated area, or fever. Stop use and seek medical advice, because these can signal a spreading skin infection.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy or hypersensitivity to honey, manuka, beeswax or other bee products, pollen, calendula or other plants in the Asteraceae (daisy) family, olive oil, or any other ingredient in the salve.
  • Do not use near the eyes or inside the nose or mouth.
  • Do not apply to deep wounds, puncture wounds or serious burns unless advised by a healthcare professional.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • No clinically significant interactions with oral medicines are known for this product when it is used on small areas of skin.
  • Avoid applying other creams, ointments or medicated products on the same area at the same time unless a pharmacist has advised it, as the oil and wax base may change how they are absorbed.
  • No food interactions are known for this product.

Quick Tips

  • Do a small patch test on the inner forearm before first use, especially if you have allergies to bee products or plants.
  • Use a clean fingertip or spatula every time so the salve remains uncontaminated.
  • Keep the lid on tightly, as exposure to air and moisture can affect the salve.
  • Apply a thin layer; thick layers feel sticky and can stain clothing.
  • Keep the tin in a cool place, because heat can soften or melt the salve.
  • Check the label for honey, bee product and plant ingredients if anyone in the household has allergies.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Sven’s Island Miracle Manuka Medi-Salve Ointment is for external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes. Because it contains honey, beeswax and plant extracts, people with allergies to bee products, pollen or plants in the daisy family should take care. Do not apply to deep wounds or serious burns without medical advice. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, and those with very sensitive skin, should check with a pharmacist before use. Stop use if irritation develops.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: See a doctor or pharmacist if the skin becomes more red, warm, swollen or painful, if pus or fever develops, if a rash spreads, if you show signs of an allergic reaction, or if the skin problem continues or worsens despite following the label directions. Seek urgent medical help for any swelling of the face or lips or difficulty breathing.
