Overview

Systane Hydration UD Eye Drop is a sterile, preservative-free lubricant eye drop from Alcon, supplied by DoctorOnCall as a pack of 30 single-use vials of 0.7 ml each. It is classed as an ocular lubricant, or artificial tear, and its active ingredients are sodium hyaluronate, polyethylene glycol 400 and propylene glycol. The formulation also contains hydroxypropyl guar, a gelling agent that thickens when the drop is placed on the eye.

Because each vial is single-use and contains no preservative, the drop is free from preservatives such as benzalkonium chloride, which some people find irritating to the eye surface. The other listed ingredients are sorbitol, aminomethyl propanol, boric acid, sodium borate, potassium chloride and sodium chloride in a sterile aqueous solution. According to Alcon product information for other markets, the drop is compatible with soft contact lenses, and please check the leaflet in your pack for the guidance that applies to the version you receive.

The vial must be opened just before use and discarded straight after, even if some liquid is left, so that the contents remain sterile. It is for use in the eye only and should not be swallowed or injected, and the tip must not touch the eye or any surface. Our pharmacist team can answer questions about ingredients, contact lens use and correct handling before you order.

Directions for Use

Wash your hands, then twist off the tip of a single-use vial, taking care not to touch the opening. Tilt your head back slightly, gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket, and squeeze one or two drops into the eye without letting the tip touch the eye, eyelid or skin. Close your eye gently, blink a few times and dab away any excess with a clean tissue.

Discard the vial straight after use, even if some liquid remains, and do not save it for later or share it with anyone else. If you wear contact lenses, follow the guidance in the pack leaflet or ask your eye care professional whether to remove them first, and do not soak or disinfect lenses in this product.

  • If you use other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between different products.
  • Do not use if the solution changes colour or becomes cloudy, or if the vial is damaged.
  • Avoid driving or operating machinery until any temporary blurred vision has cleared.

Dosage

Instil 1 or 2 drops into the affected eye or eyes as needed throughout the day, or as directed by your eye care professional or on the pack. Use a new vial each time and do not use more drops than needed.

Missed dose: this product is used as needed, so there is no dose to make up. If eye pain, changes in vision, continued redness or irritation occur, or if the condition worsens or persists for more than 72 hours, stop using the drops and consult a doctor or eye care professional.

Shelf Life

Unopened vials should be used before the expiry date printed on the carton and foil pouch. Each vial is single-use, so it must be discarded immediately after opening and use, and it must never be kept for later use.

Storage Instructions

Store between 5°C and 25°C according to the Alcon storage statement for this product in other markets, or as printed on the pack you receive. Keep the vials in their original foil pouch and carton until needed, away from direct sunlight and heat.

  • Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
  • Do not freeze.
  • Do not use a vial after the expiry date or if the tip is damaged.

Side Effects

  • Common: Temporary blurred vision straight after instilling the drops.
  • Common: Mild eye irritation, stinging or a feeling that something is in the eye.
  • Common: Watery eyes or a sticky feeling on the eyelids as the gel-like drop spreads.
  • Serious: Eye pain, a change in vision, or redness and irritation that continues, which can signal a problem needing assessment by an eye care professional.
  • Serious: Allergic reactions such as swelling of the eyelids, face or lips, a rash, or difficulty breathing, which need the drops to be stopped and urgent medical care sought.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to sodium hyaluronate, polyethylene glycol, propylene glycol, hydroxypropyl guar or any other ingredient in the drops.
  • Use if the solution has changed colour or become cloudy, or if the vial is damaged or has already been opened.
  • Use as a cleanser or disinfectant for contact lenses, or for soaking lenses.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • No clinically significant interactions with medicines taken by mouth are known for lubricant eye drops used as directed.
  • If you use other eye drops or eye ointments, wait at least 5 minutes between products, and apply ointments last so that they do not stop other drops from reaching the eye.
  • Some eye medicines and contact lens products can affect the eye surface, so tell your pharmacist or eye care professional about all products you use in your eyes.
  • No food interactions are known for this product.

Quick Tips

  • Wash your hands before opening a vial so the eye area stays clean.
  • Twist off the tip carefully and keep the opening away from your fingers, eyelashes and any surface.
  • Use each vial once, then throw it away, even if it still contains liquid.
  • Wait a few minutes before driving if your vision is briefly blurred after instilling the drops.
  • Keep a gap of at least 5 minutes between this and any other eye drops.
  • Store the vials in their pouch, between 5°C and 25°C, and away from children.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the active ingredients in Systane Hydration UD Eye Drop?

The active ingredients are sodium hyaluronate, polyethylene glycol 400 and propylene glycol, and the drops also contain hydroxypropyl guar, sorbitol, aminomethyl propanol, boric acid, sodium borate and salts. Alcon labelling for this range gives polyethylene glycol 400 as 0.4% and propylene glycol as 0.3%, and the pack shows the exact composition for the version you receive.

Does Systane Hydration UD Eye Drop contain preservatives?

No, it is a preservative-free eye drop, and each 0.7 ml vial is designed for a single use. This means it does not contain preservatives such as benzalkonium chloride, and any unused liquid in an opened vial should be thrown away rather than saved.

Can I use Systane Hydration UD Eye Drop with contact lenses?

Alcon product information for other markets states that the drops can be used with soft contact lenses, but the guidance can vary by version, so please check the leaflet in your pack. Do not soak or disinfect lenses in the product, and ask an eye care professional if you are unsure whether to take your lenses out first.

Who should avoid using Systane Hydration UD Eye Drop?

It should not be used by anyone who is allergic to any of its ingredients, or when the solution is cloudy or discoloured or the vial is damaged. Anyone with eye pain, a change in vision or persistent redness should see a doctor or eye care professional rather than continuing to use the drops.

How should I open and discard the single-use vials of Systane Hydration UD Eye Drop?

Twist off the tip without touching the opening, instil the drops, and then throw the vial away straight after use, even if liquid remains. Reusing or saving an opened vial can allow bacteria to enter the drops, so each vial must be used only once.

How should I store Systane Hydration UD Eye Drop?

Store the vials between 5°C and 25°C, in their foil pouch and carton, away from direct sunlight, following the storage statement on your pack. Keep them out of the reach of children and do not use any vial after the expiry date.

Relevant Information

Precautions: For external use in the eye only. Do not touch the tip of the vial to the eye or any surface, because this can contaminate the drops and cause eye infection. Do not use the drops if the solution changes colour or becomes cloudy, and do not swallow. Temporary blurred vision may affect the ability to drive or use machinery, so wait until your vision clears. Consult your pharmacist or doctor before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have had eye surgery, or if you wear contact lenses and are unsure how to use the drops with them. Keep out of the reach of children.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: stop using the drops and consult a doctor or eye care professional if you develop eye pain, a change in vision, continued redness or irritation, or if the condition worsens or persists for more than 72 hours. Seek urgent care for a sudden loss or change of vision, severe pain, light sensitivity, a discharge from the eye, or swelling of the eyelids or face after using the drops, since these may need prompt assessment.
