Overview

Taflotan-S Ophthalmic Solution 0.3ml contains tafluprost, a synthetic prostaglandin F2-alpha analogue eye drop used to lower elevated pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure) in open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. This formulation is preservative-free, supplied in single-use vials, which reduces the risk of eye irritation from preservatives with long-term use. It is manufactured by Santen Pharmaceutical, a company specialising in ophthalmic medicines.

Tafluprost works by increasing the outflow of the fluid inside the eye (aqueous humour) through an alternative drainage pathway called the uveoscleral route, which lowers intraocular pressure and helps protect the optic nerve from damage caused by sustained high eye pressure.

How it Works

As a prostaglandin analogue, tafluprost binds to prostaglandin receptors in the eye and increases outflow of aqueous humour through the uveoscleral pathway, lowering intraocular pressure over the course of the day.

Directions for Use

Wash your hands before use. Tilt your head back, gently pull down the lower eyelid to form a small pocket, and instil one drop without letting the dropper tip touch the eye or any surface. Press gently on the inner corner of the eye for about one minute after instillation to reduce systemic absorption. If using other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between different products.

Dosage

The usual dose is one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily, preferably in the evening. Your doctor will confirm the dosing schedule and which eye(s) to treat based on your intraocular pressure measurements.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Eye redness or irritation
  • Blurred vision
  • Increased eyelash growth
  • Dry eyes
  • Changes in eye colour
  • Sensation of a foreign body in the eye
  • Eyelid darkening
  • Mild eye discomfort or itching

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to tafluprost or any component of this product
  • Use with caution in active intraocular inflammation (uveitis) as prostaglandin analogues may worsen inflammation
  • Caution in aphakic or pseudophakic patients with a torn posterior lens capsule due to a risk of macular oedema

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Using other eye drops containing prostaglandin analogues is not recommended, as this does not improve effect and may increase side effects
  • Space out other topical eye medications by at least 5 minutes to avoid one drop washing out another
  • Inform your doctor if you use any other eye drops or have had eye surgery

Quick Tips

  • Do not touch the dropper tip to your eye or any surface to avoid contamination
  • If you wear contact lenses, remove them before instilling the drop and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them
  • Be aware that this medicine may gradually and permanently darken your iris colour, especially with long-term use
  • Attend your scheduled eye pressure check-ups so your doctor can monitor your response to treatment
