Overview

Teck Aun Chi-Kit Pills are traditional herbal pills made by Teck Aun Medical Factory in Malaysia, and they are available over the counter in small packs such as a 2.25 g sachet or tube. According to the product information and manufacturer labelling available to us, the formulation includes tangerine peel (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Radix Angelicae Dahuricae, areca nut (Semen Arecae), Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Fructus Citri, Herba Asari, patchouli (Herba Pogostemonis), peppermint oil, liquorice root (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Chaenomeles fruit, Amomum fruit, peppermint herb, Radix Aucklandiae and Poria. As a multi-herb preparation, the leaflet in your pack is the best guide to the exact formulation.

The pills are very small and are taken by mouth with water. As a multi-herb preparation, the actual composition and the amount of each herb are decided by the manufacturer, and some of the ingredients carry specific cautions: liquorice root can affect blood pressure and potassium levels when taken in large amounts over a long period, and areca nut, Asarum herb and other strongly active herbs are not suitable for everybody. For this reason, the dosing chart in the pack leaflet should always be followed.

The pills are commonly sold as 2.25 g x 12 packs and as single tubes; please check the product page for the pack sizes currently listed. Product information indicates the pills are not suitable for infants under 1 year of age, and the pack advises that children should be dosed according to age as shown on the leaflet. Our pharmacist team can advise if you take other medicines, have a long-term condition, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Directions for Use

Wash your hands and take the pills by mouth with a glass of warm or plain water.

Product information for adults states 3 to 4 pills, 2 to 3 times a day after meals. Pack types differ (for example sachet or tube packs), so please follow the dosing chart in the leaflet inside your own pack.

Swallow the pills with water; do not take them dry. Young children should be given only the age-based amount stated on the leaflet and should be supervised to avoid choking.

Do not take more than the amount stated on the pack, and do not take the pills for longer than the pack recommends without speaking to a doctor or pharmacist.

Replace the cap or reseal the pack straight after use, and keep it away from moisture.

Dosage

Adults: product information states 3 to 4 pills taken 2 to 3 times a day after meals, depending on the instructions on the pack. Children: follow the age-based amounts shown on the pack leaflet, and do not give the pills to infants under 1 year of age.

If you miss a dose, take the next dose at the usual time and do not take a double dose. Stop taking the pills and speak to a doctor or pharmacist if symptoms continue beyond 3 days, get worse, or if you need the pills often.

Shelf Life

Use before the expiry date printed on the pack. Herbal pills can absorb moisture, so if the pills become soft, mouldy, discoloured or develop an unusual smell, do not use them.

Storage Instructions

Store at room temperature, below 30 °C, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the sachet or tube tightly closed and keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild stomach upset, nausea or a change in bowel habit in some people.
  • Common: A strong herbal taste or aroma that some people find unpleasant.
  • Serious: Rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips or tongue, or difficulty breathing. These are signs of a severe allergic reaction; stop taking the pills and get emergency medical care.
  • Serious: Persistent or severe vomiting, severe abdominal pain, blood in the stool or signs of dehydration such as dizziness and very dark urine. Stop taking the pills and see a doctor, as these can indicate a condition that needs medical assessment.
  • Serious: Muscle weakness, palpitations, swelling of the ankles or very high blood pressure with prolonged or excessive use, which can happen with the liquorice root ingredient. Stop and see a doctor.

Contraindications

  • Do not give to infants under 1 year of age.
  • Do not take if you are allergic to any of the herbal ingredients, including liquorice root, areca nut, peppermint or Asarum.
  • Do not take during pregnancy unless a doctor has advised it, as some of the herbal ingredients are not recommended in pregnancy.
  • Do not take if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart or kidney disease, or low blood potassium, because of the liquorice root content, unless a doctor has advised it.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Liquorice root (Radix Glycyrrhizae) can interact with diuretics, digoxin, corticosteroids and some blood pressure medicines by lowering potassium or affecting blood pressure. Ask a doctor or pharmacist if you take any of these.
  • If you take warfarin or other blood thinners, diabetes medicines or any long-term medicine, ask a doctor or pharmacist before taking herbal pills, as combination herbal products can alter the effect of some medicines.
  • Allow at least one to two hours between these pills and other oral medicines unless a pharmacist has advised otherwise.
  • No specific food interactions are known, but avoid alcohol and heavy, oily meals while taking the pills.

Quick Tips

  • Take the pills after meals with a glass of water, as directed on the pack.
  • Follow the age-based dose on the leaflet and do not give extra pills to a child.
  • Stop taking the pills and see a doctor if symptoms last more than 3 days, as this suggests the cause needs a proper check.
  • Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all herbal products you take, especially if you take blood pressure or heart medicines.
  • Avoid taking the pills if you are pregnant unless a doctor has advised it.
  • Reseal the sachet or tube tightly after each use and store it in a cool, dry place away from children.
