Overview

Ticlid 250mg Tablet contains ticlopidine 250mg, an antiplatelet medicine (thienopyridine, P2Y12 inhibitor) used to reduce the risk of stroke in patients who have had warning signs of stroke or a previous stroke, generally reserved for patients who cannot tolerate or are not suitable for other antiplatelet agents, due to its serious blood-count risks described below.

Ticlopidine works by stopping platelets from clumping together to form clots that can block blood vessels supplying the brain, but it requires close blood monitoring because of a risk of severe reductions in white blood cells or platelets, particularly in the first few months of treatment.

How it Works

Ticlopidine irreversibly blocks the P2Y12 receptor on platelets, preventing ADP-mediated platelet activation and aggregation. This reduces the platelets’ ability to form clots, lowering the risk of an artery-blocking clot causing an ischaemic stroke.

Directions for Use

Take Ticlid 250mg Tablet with food to reduce stomach upset, at evenly spaced times twice a day. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Attend every scheduled blood test appointment during treatment, as this monitoring is essential for your safety, and contact your doctor immediately if you develop fever, sore throat, mouth ulcers, or unusual bruising.

Dosage

The usual dose of Ticlid 250mg Tablet is 250mg twice daily, taken with food. Because of the risk of severe blood-count abnormalities, your doctor will arrange regular full blood counts (typically every 2 weeks for the first 3 months of treatment) and will only continue treatment if your blood counts remain safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ticlid 250mg Tablet used for?

Ticlid 250mg Tablet is used to reduce the risk of stroke in patients who have experienced warning signs of stroke or a previous stroke, usually when other antiplatelet options are not suitable.

Why do I need frequent blood tests with this medicine?

Ticlopidine carries a risk of causing a severe drop in white blood cells (neutropenia) or platelets, most often within the first 3 months of treatment, so regular blood counts are essential to detect this early.

What symptoms should make me contact my doctor immediately?

Contact your doctor right away if you develop fever, sore throat, mouth ulcers, unusual bruising, or signs of infection, as these can indicate a serious blood disorder that requires urgent evaluation.

Can I take this medicine with aspirin?

Combining ticlopidine with aspirin or other blood thinners significantly increases bleeding risk and should only be done if specifically directed by your doctor.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Ticlid 250mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue as normal. Do not double the dose.
