Overview

Toviaz 8mg Prolonged-Release Tablet contains fesoterodine, an antimuscarinic medicine used to treat the symptoms of overactive bladder, including urinary urgency, increased urinary frequency, and urge incontinence.

Fesoterodine works by blocking muscarinic receptors in the bladder muscle, which reduces involuntary bladder muscle contractions and increases bladder capacity, helping to reduce the sudden, strong urge to urinate.

How it Works

Toviaz is converted in the body to its active form, which selectively blocks muscarinic receptors on the bladder muscle; this reduces involuntary contractions of the bladder wall, allowing it to hold more urine before the urge to void is triggered.

Directions for Use

Take once daily with liquid, with or without food, and swallow the tablet whole – do not crush, break, or chew, as this is a prolonged-release formulation.

Dosage

The usual dose is one 4mg tablet once daily, which your doctor may increase to 8mg once daily based on your response and tolerability; the maximum recommended dose is 8mg once daily.

Shelf Life

Refer to the expiry date printed on the packaging.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

  • Inform your doctor of all medicines you are taking, especially antifungal medicines and other bladder medicines.

Quick Tips

  • Sip water regularly or use sugar-free sweets to relieve dry mouth, a common side effect of this medicine.
  • Increase dietary fibre and fluid intake if you experience constipation while taking this medicine.
  • Use caution if driving or operating machinery until you know how this medicine affects you, as it can rarely cause blurred vision.
  • Seek medical attention if you have difficulty passing urine or notice reduced urine output, as this medicine can worsen urinary retention.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Toviaz used for?

Toviaz contains fesoterodine and is used to treat overactive bladder symptoms, including urgency, frequency, and urge incontinence.

How does Toviaz work?

It blocks receptors on the bladder muscle that trigger involuntary contractions, allowing the bladder to hold more urine before the urge to void.

Why does my mouth feel dry after taking this medicine?

Dry mouth is a common effect of this class of medicine, as it also affects other muscles that use similar receptors, including the salivary glands – sipping water can help.

How long does it take for this medicine to work?

Some improvement may be noticed within a few weeks, but the full effect may take up to eight weeks – continue taking it regularly as prescribed.

What are the common side effects?

Common side effects include dry mouth, constipation, dry eyes, and headache.

Can I take this medicine if I have glaucoma?

It should not be used if you have uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma – tell your doctor about any eye conditions before starting.

Can I crush or split this tablet?

No, this is a prolonged-release tablet and must be swallowed whole to work correctly – crushing or splitting can release the medicine too quickly.
