Overview

Utix Effervescent Granules 4g is a lemon-type effervescent granule supplied in single-dose 4 g sachets. The active ingredient is sodium citrate, and the granules also contain sodium bicarbonate, tartaric acid and citric acid, which react with water to release carbon dioxide and form a fizzy, ready-to-drink solution. The product is taken by mouth after the granules have fully dissolved in water.

Sodium citrate is a citrate salt that is metabolised in the body to bicarbonate, which is why it is classed as an alkalinising agent. Because the formula contains sodium bicarbonate and sodium citrate, each sachet delivers a meaningful amount of sodium, which is an important point for people who need to limit their salt intake. The effervescent format helps the ingredients dissolve completely before drinking, and each sachet is a pre-measured dose.

Utix Effervescent Granules 4g is an over-the-counter product sold through DoctorOnCall as an online pharmacy serving customers in Malaysia and Singapore. Pack sizes follow the variation options shown on this page, such as boxes of 12 sachets. Our pharmacist team can answer your questions about dosing, timing with other medicines and suitability before you place an order.

Directions for Use

Empty the contents of one sachet into a glass of water, ideally about 200 to 250 ml of cold or room-temperature water. Stir well until the granules are completely dissolved and the fizzing has stopped, and drink the solution immediately after preparation.

Take up to three times daily, or as directed by a doctor or pharmacist or on the pack leaflet. The product can be taken with or without food. Do not take the granules dry, and do not prepare the solution in advance to drink later.

Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day while using the product. Do not exceed the stated daily dose, and do not use the product for longer than the period stated on the leaflet without speaking to a doctor or pharmacist.

Dosage

For adults, dissolve one 4 g sachet in a glass of water and drink it up to three times daily, or as directed by a healthcare professional. Do not exceed three sachets in 24 hours unless a doctor has advised otherwise.

This product is not recommended for children unless advised by a doctor. If a dose is missed, take the next dose at the usual time; do not take extra sachets to make up for a missed dose. Speak to a doctor or pharmacist if symptoms do not improve within the period stated on the leaflet or get worse.

Shelf Life

Use before the expiry date printed on each sachet and on the outer carton. Each sachet is single-dose; use the whole sachet once it is opened and do not keep a prepared solution for later.

Storage Instructions

Store at room temperature, below 30°C, in a dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the sachets in their original carton until use and keep out of the reach and sight of children.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild stomach upset, nausea or a feeling of fullness or bloating, particularly when the solution is drunk quickly.
  • Common: Belching or wind caused by the carbon dioxide released when the granules dissolve.
  • Common: Mild diarrhoea or loose stools in some people.
  • Serious: Allergic reaction such as rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing; stop use and seek urgent medical care.
  • Serious: Swelling of the ankles or hands, rapid weight gain or breathlessness, which may be signs of fluid retention caused by the sodium content; seek medical advice promptly.
  • Serious: Muscle weakness, twitching, confusion or irregular heartbeat, which can occur if the body’s salt and acid-base balance is disturbed; seek urgent medical attention.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity or allergy to sodium citrate, sodium bicarbonate, citric acid, tartaric acid or any other ingredient in the granules.
  • Severe kidney impairment or kidney failure.
  • People on a sodium-restricted diet, or with heart failure, uncontrolled high blood pressure or conditions that cause fluid retention, unless advised by a doctor.
  • Metabolic alkalosis, or conditions with a high blood bicarbonate level.
  • Use in children unless advised by a doctor.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Antacids that contain aluminium, because citrate may increase the absorption of aluminium; separate the timing and ask a pharmacist for advice.
  • Medicines whose absorption or excretion depends on the acidity of the urine, such as nitrofurantoin, methenamine, quinidine, pseudoephedrine, lithium and salicylates: urine alkalinisation can change their effect; ask a doctor or pharmacist.
  • Other products containing sodium, such as effervescent tablets or antacids, can add to the total daily sodium intake.
  • Take other oral medicines about two hours apart from the granules where possible, as the product can alter stomach acidity.
  • No specific food interactions are known; drink the solution with plenty of water.

Quick Tips

  • Use a clean glass, add the sachet to water (not the other way round) and wait until the fizzing stops before drinking.
  • Drink the solution immediately after it is prepared rather than leaving it to stand.
  • Check the sodium content on the pack if you are on a salt-restricted diet and ask your pharmacist before using it.
  • Keep a note of how many sachets you have taken each day so that you do not exceed the stated daily dose.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day while using the product.
  • Store sachets in a dry place and do not use any sachet that is damaged, damp or has hardened.
