Vaseline Pure Repairing Jelly

Vaseline Pure Repairing Jelly is a single-ingredient skin product made from 100% white petrolatum (USP). Petrolatum, also known as petroleum jelly, is a purified, semi-solid mixture of hydrocarbons that is soft, smooth and spreadable at skin temperature. It is offered over the counter as a skin protectant jelly and is supplied in a tub or jar; please check the product page for the pack sizes available.

Because petrolatum is an occlusive ingredient, it sits on the surface of the skin as a physical layer rather than being absorbed deeply. The formulation does not contain water, which is one reason why the jelly has a thick, greasy texture that stays on the skin for some time after it is applied. White petrolatum is the only active ingredient listed, and the product is not a medicated ointment.

The jelly is stable, easy to store and does not need to be refrigerated, which is why many households keep a tub in the bathroom, bag or first aid kit. Because it is oil-based, it can leave marks on clothing and fabrics, and it should be kept away from open flames and heat sources. Wash your hands and make sure the area of skin is clean and dry before application.

Take a small amount of jelly with a clean finger or a clean spatula and warm it between your fingertips.

Apply a thin layer to the area of skin and spread it gently; a little goes a long way.

Reapply when needed, or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.

For external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes, and do not swallow. If it gets into your eyes, rinse them well with clean water.

Close the lid tightly after use and avoid dipping dirty fingers into the tub.

Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin as needed, or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. There is no fixed maximum, but a thin layer is usually enough, and using thicker layers on large areas is not necessary. If your skin has not improved or becomes worse with regular use, stop using the jelly and speak to a doctor or pharmacist.

Use before the expiry date printed on the packaging. Discard the jelly if its colour, smell or texture changes noticeably, or if it has become contaminated.

Store at room temperature, below 30 °C, in a cool place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Keep the lid tightly closed and keep out of reach of children.

• Common: A greasy or heavy feeling on the skin and marks on clothing or bedding.
• Common: Mild skin irritation or redness in people with sensitive skin; this is uncommon.
• Serious: Swelling of the face or lips, widespread rash or hives, or difficulty breathing. This is a rare allergic reaction and needs emergency medical attention.
• Serious: Increasing redness, pain, warmth, swelling or pus where the jelly has been applied over a wound. These can be signs of infection, and the jelly should not be applied over infected skin.

• Do not use if you are allergic to petrolatum or petroleum jelly.
• Do not apply to deep or puncture wounds, animal bites or serious burns without medical advice.
• Do not apply to skin that shows signs of infection, such as pus, increasing redness or swelling, without medical advice.
• Do not use inside the nostrils for long periods or put it in the nose or mouth of an infant, as inhaling oily products can cause lung irritation.

• Petrolatum can weaken latex condoms and diaphragms, so do not use the jelly together with them.
• Applying jelly over another medicated skin product, such as a steroid cream, can increase the amount that is absorbed through the skin. Ask a pharmacist before layering the jelly over any medicated product.
• Do not use petroleum-based products on or near the face, nose or lips of someone receiving oxygen therapy, as it can be a fire risk.
• No food interactions are known.

• Apply to clean skin, because the jelly can seal in dirt or bacteria if the skin is not clean.
• Warm a small amount between your fingertips so that it spreads smoothly.
• Use a clean finger or spatula each time, so that the contents of the tub stay uncontaminated.
• Keep the jelly away from open flames, candles, cigarettes and other heat sources, as petroleum jelly is flammable.
• Wear old clothes or use a clean cloth on top when applying generous amounts, as the jelly can mark fabrics.
• Keep a small tub in your bag or first aid kit so that you always have one at hand.

Precautions: Petrolatum is generally well tolerated, but a thick layer over unclean skin can trap dirt and bacteria. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, petrolatum is generally regarded as safe for external use, but please check with a doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. Use with care on babies and children, and do not apply it inside the nose or mouth. Keep away from heat and open flames.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: See a doctor or pharmacist if your skin condition does not improve, gets worse, becomes painful, red, warm or swollen, or starts to produce pus. Seek urgent help for swelling of the face or lips, difficulty breathing, or if the jelly has been swallowed or inhaled and breathing becomes difficult.
