Overview

Ventolin HFA 100mcg Metered Dose Inhaler contains Salbutamol (as sulfate) 100mcg per actuation and is presented as an inhaler. It is supplied in a pack size of 200 doses.

It is classified as a non-prescription medicine, so no prescription is needed to order it. Under Malaysian rules for medicine information, this page carries product, safety and handling information only.

You can consult a doctor or pharmacist online on DoctorOnCall about this product before or after you order. Every order is checked by a registered pharmacist before it is delivered. Always read the label and the leaflet supplied with the pack.

Directions for Use

Shake the inhaler well before use, breathe out fully away from the mouthpiece, then place the mouthpiece between your lips and begin breathing in slowly as you press down firmly on the canister to release one puff, continuing to inhale steadily and deeply. Hold your breath for around 10 seconds, then breathe out slowly, waiting about 30 seconds before a second puff if needed; some users notice the HFA spray feels slightly softer or warmer than older propellant types, which is a normal difference in formulation rather than a sign of reduced effectiveness.

Dosage

The usual adult and child dose for acute symptom relief is one to two puffs (100 to 200mcg) as needed, and one to two puffs about 15 minutes beforehand can help prevent exercise-induced symptoms. Use should not exceed the frequency recommended on the label or by your pharmacist or doctor; needing it more often than this, or finding your usual dose less effective than before, should prompt a review of your overall asthma or COPD management.

Shelf Life

When stored correctly and left unopened, Ventolin HFA 100mcg MDI is generally stable until the expiry date printed on the canister and carton; the number of actuations used should be tracked using the dose counter where fitted, as the inhaler should not be relied upon once the labelled number of doses has been dispensed.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C, away from direct heat, open flame and frost, and never puncture, break apart or burn the canister, even when it seems empty, as it remains under pressure. Keep out of the reach and sight of children.

Side Effects

  • Shakiness or tremors
  • Headache
  • Increased heart rate
  • Nervousness or restlessness
  • Muscle cramps
  • Dry mouth or throat irritation

Contraindications

  • Known allergy or hypersensitivity to salbutamol or to any excipient in this HFA formulation
  • Severe, uncontrolled cardiac arrhythmia, unless specifically assessed and approved by a doctor
  • Reliance on this inhaler alone as a substitute for a prescribed preventer inhaler in persistent asthma
  • Rapidly worsening or severe breathlessness that does not respond to the inhaler, which requires emergency medical attention

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Beta-blocker medicines: can blunt the bronchodilating effect of salbutamol and worsen airway narrowing
  • Other beta-2 agonists or stimulant decongestants: additive tremor, palpitations or nervousness
  • Diuretics or corticosteroids: may add to the risk of low blood potassium with frequent salbutamol use
  • MAO inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants: may increase cardiovascular side effects when combined with salbutamol

Quick Tips

  • Carry this inhaler with you at all times if you have a history of asthma or sudden breathlessness
  • Prime a new inhaler according to the leaflet instructions before first use, and if it has not been used for some time
  • Track the number of puffs used, as the counter (if present) helps you know when a replacement is needed
  • Have your technique checked periodically, as the fine mist produced by the HFA propellant still requires slow, coordinated inhalation to reach the lungs effectively
  • Seek urgent care if breathlessness does not settle after using your inhaler as directed

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Salbutamol (as sulfate) 100mcg per actuation (active ingredient)
  • Hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) propellant
  • Other pharmaceutical excipients as per the manufacturer's formulation

Relevant Information

Because the HFA propellant in this inhaler produces a mist that some patients perceive as softer, quieter or slightly less forceful than older formulations, it is worth confirming with a pharmacist that inhaler technique is still delivering the medicine effectively, particularly if you have recently switched from a different device. As with any salbutamol reliever, needing to use it more than two to three times a week outside of pre-exercise dosing usually signals that asthma control needs to be reviewed with a healthcare professional rather than simply increasing reliever use.
