Priligy 30mg vs 60mg: Dosage, How to Take It & How Long It Works

What is Priligy?
Priligy is the brand name for dapoxetine, a short-acting medicine used to treat premature ejaculation in men aged 18 to 64. It works by increasing serotonin activity in the nervous system, which helps delay ejaculation.
Unlike daily medicines in the same class, Priligy is taken only when needed, before sexual activity. It is a prescription medicine in Malaysia, so a doctor needs to assess you before it can be supplied.
Priligy 30mg vs 60mg at a glance
Both strengths contain the same medicine and are taken the same way. The difference is the dose, and who it suits.

|---|---|---|
| Role | Starting dose for all new users | Step-up dose if 30mg is not enough |
| Who it suits | First-time users, men sensitive to side effects | Men who tolerated 30mg but saw too little benefit |

How to take Priligy
- Take one tablet 1 to 3 hours before you expect to have sex.
- Swallow it whole with at least one full glass of water. This lowers the chance of fainting.
- Take it with or without food. A light meal may help if it makes you feel sick.
- Avoid alcohol. Alcohol with Priligy increases dizziness, drowsiness and the risk of fainting.
- Do not take more than one tablet in 24 hours, whatever the strength.
- Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel dizzy or drowsy after taking it.
If you feel light-headed after a dose, lie down with your head low or sit with your head between your knees until it passes. Fainting is uncommon, but it is the most important side effect to know about.
How long does Priligy take to work and how long does it last?
Priligy is absorbed quickly and reaches its highest level in the blood about 1 hour after you take it. That is why the recommended window is 1 to 3 hours before sex, not immediately before.
Its main effect is short-lived: blood levels fall by more than 95% within 24 hours, so it does not build up in your body with occasional use. Plan each dose around the time you expect to have sex rather than taking it the night before.
Results often improve over the first few uses. Doctors usually suggest trying at least 6 doses over about 4 weeks before judging whether the current strength is working.
When a doctor may move you to 60mg
Your doctor may consider 60mg only when both of these are true:
- 30mg has not delayed ejaculation enough after a fair trial of several doses
- You have had no troublesome side effects on 30mg, particularly no dizziness or fainting
The doctor will also check that nothing has changed in your health or medicines since you started. If 60mg causes side effects, going back to 30mg is usually the next step. Treatment is typically reviewed after 4 weeks, or 6 doses, and at least every 6 months after that.
Who should not take Priligy
Priligy is not suitable if you have:
- Heart problems such as heart failure, heart rhythm problems, significant coronary artery disease or heart valve disease
- A history of fainting
- A history of mania, bipolar disorder or severe depression
- Moderate or severe liver problems
It must not be combined with certain medicines, including:
- Antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclics) and MAO inhibitors, or within 14 days of stopping an MAO inhibitor
- Lithium, linezolid, tramadol, triptans for migraine and St John’s wort
- Strong antifungal or antiviral medicines such as ketoconazole, itraconazole or ritonavir
Tell the doctor about every medicine and supplement you take, including erectile dysfunction treatments.
Possible side effects
Most side effects are mild and short-lived. The most common are nausea, dizziness, headache, diarrhoea, difficulty sleeping and tiredness. They are more frequent at 60mg than at 30mg.
Stop taking Priligy and seek medical help if you faint, have a seizure, or notice changes in mood such as agitation or low mood.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take Priligy every day?
No. Priligy is designed to be taken only when needed, at most once in 24 hours. It is not a daily medicine.
What happens if I take more than one tablet in 24 hours?
Taking more raises the risk of side effects such as fainting, without a meaningful added benefit. Contact a doctor if you have taken more than prescribed.
Is 60mg stronger than 30mg?
It is a higher dose of the same medicine. It may give a longer delay for some men, but it also causes more side effects, which is why everyone starts on 30mg.
Can I drink alcohol with Priligy?
It is best avoided. Alcohol increases dizziness and the risk of fainting.
Can I take Priligy with erectile dysfunction medicine?
Some men are prescribed both, but only a doctor should decide this after reviewing your health.
Do I need a prescription for Priligy in Malaysia?
Yes. Priligy is a prescription medicine, so a doctor must assess you before it is supplied.
