Overview

Apo-Azathioprine 50mg Tablet is a prescription-only medicine (POM) presented as a tablet, with Azathioprine 50mg as its active ingredient content.

This page is limited to product, safety and handling information, in line with Malaysian rules on prescription medicine information for the public. Your prescriber or pharmacist is the right source for anything beyond that, together with the leaflet inside the pack.

Through DoctorOnCall, this product is supplied after an online consultation with a licensed doctor and a valid prescription, and it is checked by a registered pharmacist before dispensing. Take it exactly as prescribed, and speak to your doctor before stopping, changing the dose, or starting any other medicine alongside it.

Directions for Use

Take Apo-Azathioprine 50mg Tablet exactly as prescribed by your specialist, usually with food to reduce nausea, and swallow the tablet whole with water. Attend all scheduled blood tests, as these are essential to detect early signs of bone marrow suppression or liver effects.

Dosage

Apo-Azathioprine 50mg Tablet dosing is individualised by your specialist based on your body weight, condition, and blood test results, and is closely monitored throughout treatment. Your doctor may check an enzyme (TPMT) level before starting treatment in some cases to help guide your dose. Never adjust your dose without your specialist’s guidance.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhoea
  • Increased risk of infections
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Skin rash or sensitivity to sunlight
  • Low blood cell counts (anaemia, low white blood cells or platelets)
  • Liver enzyme changes (rare)

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to azathioprine or mercaptopurine
  • Pregnancy, unless the benefit is judged by your specialist to clearly outweigh the risk
  • Concurrent use of live vaccines during treatment
  • Severe, pre-existing bone marrow suppression

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Allopurinol (used for gout) markedly increases azathioprine toxicity – if combined, your specialist must substantially reduce the azathioprine dose
  • ACE inhibitors may increase the risk of bone marrow suppression when combined with azathioprine
  • Warfarin’s blood-thinning effect may be altered, requiring closer INR monitoring
  • Other immunosuppressants may increase the overall risk of infection when combined

Quick Tips

  • Attend every scheduled blood test appointment, as these detect early bone marrow or liver effects before symptoms appear
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you notice unusual bruising, bleeding, or signs of infection such as fever or sore throat
  • Tell every doctor, dentist, and pharmacist that you are taking azathioprine before starting any new medicine, especially allopurinol
  • Avoid live vaccines while on this medicine unless your specialist specifically advises otherwise

Ingredients / Active Ingredients
