Overview

Duopharma Covasc 10mg Tablet contains amlodipine 10mg, a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and to prevent chest pain (angina). Covasc is manufactured by Duopharma Biotech, a well-established Malaysian pharmaceutical manufacturer.

Amlodipine works by relaxing the smooth muscle in the walls of blood vessels, which widens the vessels and lowers the resistance the heart must pump against. This reduces blood pressure and, in angina, improves blood flow to the heart muscle while easing its workload.

How it Works

Amlodipine blocks the entry of calcium into vascular smooth muscle cells through L-type calcium channels. With less calcium available, the smooth muscle in artery walls relaxes, causing the arteries to widen (vasodilation). This lowers blood pressure and increases oxygen delivery to the heart muscle, which is why it also helps prevent angina attacks.

Directions for Use

Take Duopharma Covasc 10mg Tablet once daily, at about the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water; do not crush or chew it unless your pharmacist advises otherwise. Continue taking it regularly even if you feel well, as high blood pressure usually has no symptoms.

Dosage

The usual starting dose of Duopharma Covasc 10mg Tablet for adults is 5mg once daily, which your doctor may increase to a maximum of 10mg once daily depending on your blood pressure or angina response. Your doctor may start at a lower dose if you have liver impairment or are more sensitive to blood pressure medicines. Always take exactly as prescribed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Duopharma Covasc 10mg Tablet used for?

Duopharma Covasc 10mg Tablet is used to treat high blood pressure and to prevent angina (chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart). Your doctor will confirm the specific reason it has been prescribed for you.

How long does it take for amlodipine to lower blood pressure?

Amlodipine starts working within a few hours, but its full blood-pressure-lowering effect usually takes about 1-2 weeks of regular daily use to become apparent.

Why do my ankles feel swollen since starting this medicine?

Mild ankle or foot swelling is a common effect of amlodipine because it widens blood vessels. It is usually not serious, but tell your doctor if the swelling is severe, painful, or affects only one leg.

Can I stop taking this medicine once my blood pressure is normal?

No, do not stop without consulting your doctor. High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, and stopping suddenly can cause it to rise again.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Duopharma Covasc 10mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
