Overview

Twynsta 40/10mgmg Tablet is a fixed-dose combination of telmisartan, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), and amlodipine, a calcium channel blocker, used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled on either medicine alone.

The two medicines lower blood pressure through complementary mechanisms: telmisartan blocks a hormone that narrows blood vessels, while amlodipine relaxes and widens blood vessel walls directly.

How it Works

Telmisartan blocks angiotensin II from binding to its receptor, preventing blood vessel narrowing and reducing sodium and fluid retention. Amlodipine blocks calcium entry into the smooth muscle cells of blood vessel walls, causing them to relax and widen. Together, these actions lower blood pressure more effectively than either medicine alone.

Directions for Use

Take the tablet once daily at the same time each day, with or without food, swallowed whole with water.

Dosage

The usual dose is one 40/10mgmg tablet taken once daily. Your doctor will determine the appropriate strength based on your blood pressure response and any other medicines you are taking.

Shelf Life

Refer to the expiry date printed on the packaging.

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Twynsta used for?

Twynsta is a combination of telmisartan and amlodipine used to treat high blood pressure that is not adequately controlled by either medicine alone.

How does Twynsta lower blood pressure?

Telmisartan blocks a hormone that narrows blood vessels, while amlodipine relaxes blood vessel walls directly – together they lower blood pressure more effectively.

Can I stop taking this medicine once my blood pressure is normal?

No, high blood pressure treatment is usually long-term – stopping suddenly can cause your blood pressure to rise again. Only adjust treatment under your doctor’s guidance.

Why do my ankles feel swollen on this medicine?

Ankle swelling is a recognised side effect of amlodipine; mention it to your doctor if it is bothersome or worsening.

Can I take this medicine if I am pregnant?

No, this medicine is not safe during pregnancy as it can harm the developing baby – inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant.

Can I take NSAID painkillers like ibuprofen with this medicine?

Use caution – NSAIDs can reduce the blood pressure-lowering effect and increase the risk of kidney problems, especially with regular use.

Should I avoid grapefruit juice while taking this medicine?

It is best to limit grapefruit juice, as it may increase amlodipine levels in your blood.
