Overview

Ranbaxy Vamlo 10mg Tablet contains amlodipine 10mg (as amlodipine besylate), a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and chronic stable or vasospastic (Prinzmetal’s) angina.

Amlodipine works by blocking calcium channels in the smooth muscle of blood vessel walls, preventing calcium from entering these cells. This relaxes and widens the blood vessels, lowering blood pressure and improving blood flow to the heart muscle, which reduces the frequency of angina episodes.

How it Works

Amlodipine blocks L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle, reducing calcium influx into these cells. This relaxes the smooth muscle of the arteries, reducing peripheral resistance and lowering blood pressure, and also relieves coronary artery spasm, improving blood flow to the heart muscle.

Directions for Use

Take Ranbaxy Vamlo 10mg Tablet once daily at about the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without consulting your doctor, as blood pressure and angina control need to be continuous.

Dosage

The usual starting dose of Ranbaxy Vamlo 10mg Tablet for hypertension or angina is 5mg once daily, which your doctor may increase up to a maximum of 10mg once daily depending on your response, and this strength represents a common maintenance dose. Always take exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g. clarithromycin, itraconazole) can raise amlodipine levels and increase the risk of low blood pressure or swelling
  • Amlodipine can raise simvastatin blood levels – your doctor may need to limit your simvastatin dose if the two are combined
  • Other blood-pressure-lowering medicines or nitrates may enhance the blood-pressure-lowering effect
  • Grapefruit juice may modestly increase amlodipine levels in some people

Quick Tips

  • Take at the same time each day to build a consistent routine
  • Rise slowly from sitting or lying down to reduce dizziness
  • Check your ankles and feet for swelling and mention any new swelling to your doctor
  • Do not stop this medicine abruptly without medical advice
  • Tell your doctor about all other cholesterol and heart medicines you take, given the interaction with simvastatin

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ranbaxy Vamlo 10mg Tablet used for?

Ranbaxy Vamlo 10mg Tablet is used to treat high blood pressure and certain types of angina (chest pain) by relaxing and widening blood vessels.

How long does it take for amlodipine to lower my blood pressure?

Amlodipine starts working within a few hours, but its full blood-pressure-lowering effect is usually seen after about 1-2 weeks of regular daily use.

Why are my ankles swelling since I started this medicine?

Ankle or foot swelling is a common side effect of amlodipine and other calcium channel blockers, caused by fluid shifting into the tissues around small blood vessels. Mention any new or bothersome swelling to your doctor, who can advise whether it needs to be managed.

Can I stop taking this medicine once my blood pressure is normal?

No, do not stop without consulting your doctor. High blood pressure often has no symptoms, and stopping suddenly can cause your blood pressure to rise again.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Ranbaxy Vamlo 10mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
