Overview

Deep Heat Plaster is a self-adhesive topical patch from the Deep Heat (Mentholatum) product family, sold as an OTC (Over-the-Counter) product available without a doctor’s prescription.

Its active ingredients are Menthol, Camphor, and Capsicum Extract (a Capsaicin-containing plant extract), incorporated into an adhesive patch base designed to stay in contact with the skin for a set wear time.

The plaster format differs from Deep Heat’s rub and cream formats mainly in how it is applied and how long it stays in place; it is sized for use on areas such as the back, shoulders, and limbs, and is available through DoctorOnCall in Malaysia and Singapore.

Directions for Use

  • Clean and dry the skin before application.
  • Remove the protective backing and apply the adhesive side directly to the intended area.
  • Press down firmly to ensure the edges adhere fully.
  • Leave in place for up to 8 hours, then remove.
  • Wash hands thoroughly after handling the plaster.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.

Side Effects

  • Common: Warming or tingling sensation at the application site.
  • Common: Temporary skin redness.
  • Common: Mild itching or irritation.
  • Serious: Signs of a burn, blistering, or a spreading allergic skin reaction, which require the plaster to be removed and medical advice to be sought.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy or hypersensitivity to Menthol, Camphor, Capsicum/Capsaicin, or any listed ingredient.
  • Broken skin, open wounds, rashes, or irritated skin at the application site.
  • Not intended for use near the eyes or mucous membranes.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Do not apply together with, or shortly after, other topical heat-producing or analgesic products on the same area, as this may intensify the effect and increase the risk of skin irritation or burns.
  • Do not use a heat pad, hot water bottle, heating pad, or electric blanket over the plaster, as external heat can significantly increase absorption and the risk of skin burns.
  • No clinically significant oral drug or food interactions are established, as this is a topical, localised product.

Quick Tips

  • Apply to clean, dry, unbroken skin for the best adhesion.
  • Note the time of application so you remove the plaster within the recommended wear time.
  • Avoid tight clothing directly over a freshly applied plaster, as friction can affect adhesion.
  • Wash hands after handling the plaster to avoid transferring the active ingredients to the eyes.
  • Do not apply a second plaster to the same area before the recommended interval has passed.
  • Check the expiry date before use.

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Active ingredients: Menthol, Camphor, and Capsicum Extract (Capsaicin-containing).
  • Formulated as a self-adhesive topical patch.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Do not apply to broken, irritated, or recently shaved skin, and avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes. Do not use with an external heat source such as a heating pad or hot water bottle. Use with caution in children, the elderly, and anyone with sensitive skin, and check with a pharmacist if pregnant or breastfeeding.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Speak with a doctor or pharmacist if you experience a burning sensation that does not settle after removing the plaster, signs of blistering or skin breakdown, or a spreading rash or other signs of an allergic reaction.
