Vicide 5% Cream

Vicide 5% Cream is a topical antiviral treatment containing acyclovir (aciclovir) 5%, formulated to treat cold sores (herpes labialis) that develop on and around the lips due to reactivation of the herpes simplex virus. It works best when the very first warning signs appear, such as a tingling, itchy or slightly tender patch of skin, well before any visible blister has formed.

As a self-limiting condition in generally healthy people, cold sores can be managed with Vicide 5% Cream without needing a doctor’s prescription in Malaysia. However, anyone who experiences cold sores unusually often, has sores that spread widely or take a long time to heal, or has a weakened immune system, is advised to check with a pharmacist or doctor rather than relying on self-treatment alone.

Once inside a herpes-infected skin cell, acyclovir is converted into its active form and blocks the viral DNA polymerase enzyme that the herpes simplex virus needs to copy itself. This selectively slows the virus’s ability to multiply at the infection site, which can shorten how long the outbreak lasts, reduce associated soreness and itching, and, if applied early enough, help prevent a tingling patch from developing into a full blister.

Wash your hands before use, then dab a small amount of Vicide 5% Cream onto the affected lip area as soon as you notice tingling, itching or redness, reapplying approximately five times a day at roughly four-hour intervals (no need to apply overnight) for about four to five days. Wash your hands again after each application to reduce the chance of spreading the virus to your eyes, other parts of your face, or other people, and avoid sharing items like lipstick, cups or towels while the sore is active.

For adults and adolescents, a thin layer of Vicide 5% Cream is usually applied to the affected area five times daily, roughly every four hours, for around five consecutive days; if the cold sore is not resolving within that time, continuing to self-treat without checking with a pharmacist or doctor is not recommended. Use in young children should be discussed with a pharmacist or doctor first.

When kept unopened and stored as recommended, Vicide 5% Cream generally remains stable until the expiry date printed on the tube and carton. Always check the expiry date before use and discard the cream once it has expired.

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, and close the tube cap firmly after every use to stop the cream from drying out. Keep out of the reach and sight of children.

• Known allergy or hypersensitivity to acyclovir, valacyclovir, or any excipient in the cream
• Application inside the mouth, on the eyes, or on mucous membranes
• Genital sores or lesions, which require medical evaluation rather than a lip-cream product
• People with significant immune suppression, who should seek medical advice before self-treating

• No clinically meaningful interactions are expected with typical topical use, as systemic absorption through the skin is very limited
• Avoid layering other creams, lip balms or cosmetics over the treated area at the same time, as this may reduce effectiveness or irritate the skin
• Check with a pharmacist if you are also using a prescribed oral antiviral for cold sores or shingles

• Start treatment the moment you feel tingling or itching, rather than waiting for a blister to appear
• Apply with a cotton bud or clean fingertip to help avoid spreading the virus to other areas
• Avoid kissing, sharing utensils, or close facial contact until the sore has fully crusted over and healed
• Keep a tube on hand if you experience recurrent cold sores, so treatment can begin at the earliest sign
• Speak to a pharmacist or doctor if sores keep coming back frequently, are unusually large, or are not settling with treatment

A cold sore remains contagious from the first tingling sensation until it has fully crusted and healed, so careful handwashing and avoiding close contact, especially with newborns and people with weakened immunity, is important during an outbreak. Vicide 5% Cream treats the visible outbreak but does not eliminate the herpes simplex virus itself, which stays dormant in the nerve tissue and can be triggered again by factors such as sun exposure, illness, stress or hormonal changes, which is why recurrent sufferers often keep this cream readily available.
