Overview

Deep Cold Patch is a hydrogel-based topical patch from the Deep Cold (Mentholatum) product family, sold as an OTC (Over-the-Counter) product available without a doctor’s prescription.

Its active ingredients are Menthol, Methyl Salicylate, and Camphor, held within a water-based hydrogel patch base that keeps the patch flexible and in contact with the skin for a set wear time.

The hydrogel patch format is designed to feel cooling on the skin, distinguishing it from the warming Deep Heat range within the same wider Mentholatum brand family. It is sized for use on areas such as the back, shoulders, and limbs, and is available through DoctorOnCall in Malaysia and Singapore.

Directions for Use

  • Clean and dry the skin before application.
  • Peel off the backing film and apply the patch firmly to the intended area.
  • Smooth down the edges to ensure full adhesion.
  • Leave in place for up to 8 hours, then remove and replace as needed.
  • Wash hands thoroughly after handling the patch.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.

Side Effects

  • Common: Cooling or tingling sensation at the application site.
  • Common: Temporary skin redness.
  • Common: Mild irritation at the patch edges.
  • Serious: Signs of a spreading rash, blistering, or an allergic skin reaction, which require the patch to be removed and medical advice to be sought.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy or hypersensitivity to Menthol, Methyl Salicylate, Camphor, aspirin/salicylates, or any listed ingredient.
  • Broken skin, open wounds, rashes, or irritated skin at the application site.
  • Not intended for use on the face or near the eyes or mucous membranes.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Do not use together with oral or other topical salicylate-containing products (such as products containing aspirin or other Methyl Salicylate preparations) on a large body area, as this may increase total salicylate exposure.
  • Do not use a heating pad, hot water bottle, heat wrap, or electric blanket over the patch, as external heat can significantly increase absorption of Methyl Salicylate and the risk of skin irritation or burns.
  • No clinically significant food interactions are established, as this is a topical, localised product.

Quick Tips

  • Apply to clean, dry, unbroken skin for the best adhesion.
  • Note the time of application so you remove or replace the patch within the recommended wear time.
  • Avoid combining with heating pads or hot water bottles over the same area.
  • Wash hands after handling the patch to avoid transferring active ingredients to the eyes.
  • Use caution and follow age guidance on the pack when considering use in children.
  • Check the expiry date before use.

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Active ingredients: Menthol, Methyl Salicylate, and Camphor.
  • Base: Hydrogel patch base.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Do not apply to broken, irritated, or recently shaved skin, and avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes. Do not use with an external heat source such as a heating pad or hot water bottle, as this increases salicylate absorption. Use with particular caution in children, especially over large areas or for prolonged periods, and check with a pharmacist if pregnant or breastfeeding or if you have a known sensitivity to aspirin or salicylates.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Speak with a doctor or pharmacist if you experience a burning sensation that does not settle after removing the patch, signs of blistering or skin breakdown, ringing in the ears, or a spreading rash or other signs of an allergic reaction.
