Zynaten 1mg/5ml Syrup

Zynaten 1mg/5ml Syrup contains ketotifen fumarate, an antihistamine that also has mast-cell stabilising properties, equivalent to ketotifen 1mg per 5ml of syrup. It is a non-prescription medicine used to relieve symptoms of allergic conditions such as allergic rhinitis (sneezing, runny or blocked nose, itchy eyes and nose) and allergic skin reactions such as hives (urticaria) and itching, by blocking histamine H1 receptors and reducing the release of inflammatory mediators from mast cells.

Because of this mast-cell stabilising action, ketotifen is also used as an add-on, preventive treatment in mild allergic asthma and allergic bronchitis, helping to reduce the frequency of attacks when taken regularly over time — it is not a rescue reliever and does not act quickly enough to relieve a sudden asthma attack or acute wheezing episode. Zynaten Syrup is sold without a doctor’s prescription in Malaysia and is commonly used in both children (per label or pharmacist-recommended age and dose) and adults for these allergy-related indications.

Ketotifen works in two complementary ways: it blocks histamine H1 receptors, which reduces the itching, sneezing, runny nose and skin wheals caused by histamine release during an allergic reaction, and it also stabilises mast cells, reducing their release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators in the first place. This mast-cell stabilising action is why ketotifen is used not only to relieve active allergy symptoms but also, when taken regularly, to help reduce the frequency of allergic asthma or allergic bronchitis flare-ups over time.

Zynaten Syrup is taken by mouth, usually twice daily (morning and evening) with food to help reduce stomach upset, using the measuring cup or spoon provided with the pack rather than a household spoon. Shake the bottle well before each use and take the dose at around the same times each day for the best preventive effect; if the syrup is being used for allergic asthma or bronchitis prevention, it should be taken regularly and not only when symptoms flare up.

Dosing is based on age and should follow the product label or your pharmacist’s advice: children aged 6 months to 3 years are typically given a lower dose (around 2.5ml) twice daily, while children over 3 years and adults are typically given 5ml (ketotifen 1mg) twice daily. Do not increase the dose or frequency on your own, and speak to a pharmacist or doctor before giving Zynaten to infants under 6 months.

Use Zynaten Syrup before the expiry date printed on the bottle or carton; do not use the syrup after this date, and discard any unused syrup within the in-use period stated on the label once the bottle has been opened.

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, keep the bottle tightly closed between uses, and store out of the sight and reach of children.

• Known hypersensitivity or allergy to ketotifen fumarate or any other ingredient in the syrup
• Infants under 6 months of age, unless specifically advised by a doctor

• Alcohol and other sedating medicines (e.g. other antihistamines, sleeping tablets, sedatives) — combined use may increase drowsiness
• Oral antidiabetic medicines — rare reports of reduced platelet counts when combined with ketotifen; monitor as advised by your doctor or pharmacist
• Central nervous system depressants generally — increased sedative effect possible

• Take Zynaten Syrup regularly at the same times each day if it is being used to help prevent allergic asthma or bronchitis flares — it is not a fast-acting rescue medicine
• Shake the bottle well and use the measuring device provided for an accurate dose
• Be cautious with driving or operating machinery until you know how the syrup affects your alertness
• Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine
• Keep taking the course as advised even if symptoms improve, unless your doctor or pharmacist tells you otherwise
• Seek medical advice if allergy symptoms or wheezing do not improve, or if you notice unusual bruising

Precautions: Zynaten Syrup can cause drowsiness, so caution is advised when driving, operating machinery, or supervising children until you know how it affects you; use with care in the elderly and in anyone with epilepsy, as ketotifen may occasionally lower the seizure threshold. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, and parents of young children, should check with a doctor or pharmacist before use.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Speak to a doctor or pharmacist if allergy symptoms persist or worsen despite regular use, if wheezing or breathing difficulty occurs (this syrup is not a reliever for a sudden asthma attack), or if you notice unusual bruising, bleeding, or signs of infection while on treatment.
